A comfortable airport even though it is still small, clean and tidy
Does any airline company actually fly to this airport ? If so, which one ? If there is, none of the airline schedule search engines can find it. I want to go there one day. It is close to Zonguldak. The "post" button on this comment window is inactive. Maybe I have to write at least 300 words. I'll see what I can do. This airport is also conveniently located near to Filyos, Caycuma and Bartin but I cannot write the turkish undotted I on this keyboard. It is also near to yedigoller. Aha ! You need to click on one of the stars above the text window to make it work !
It's a small airport. With good service
Security is very important these days, and I am feeling safe.
Zonguldak Çaycuma Airport, also known as Saltukova Airport, is a regional gateway serving Turkey's western Black Sea coast. It primarily handles domestic flights, connecting the provinces of Zonguldak, Bartın, and Karabük to major hubs like Istanbul and Ankara. The airport is relatively modern and was built to improve access to an area traditionally reached by winding mountain roads. It sees a mix of business travellers—many linked to the region's coal and energy industries—and leisure visitors drawn to the Black Sea's natural beauty, historical towns, and national parks. Despite its modest size, the airport offers essential services to ensure a smooth journey for passengers.
Zonguldak Çaycuma Airport sits in the Saltukova neighbourhood of Çaycuma district, approximately 30 kilometres east of Zonguldak city centre. The airport lies just off the D010 coastal highway, making it easily reachable by road. From Zonguldak city, a taxi or private transfer takes about 30–40 minutes, depending on traffic. Shared minibuses (dolmuş) also run between the airport and central bus terminals, offering a budget-friendly alternative. Car rental desks are located in the arrivals hall for those wishing to explore the region independently.
The airport's catchment area extends to Bartın (about 40 km east) and Karabük (about 70 km inland). Travellers heading to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Safranbolu, in Karabük province, often use this airport to avoid long drives from Ankara or Istanbul. There is no direct rail connection, but bus services from nearby towns link to the national transport network.
Despite its regional nature, Zonguldak Çaycuma Airport provides a range of passenger amenities. Wi-Fi is available throughout the terminal, allowing travellers to stay connected while waiting. The airport is fully wheelchair-accessible, with designated parking spaces, an accessible entrance, accessible seating areas, and accessible toilets. A nursing room and changing table are available for families with infants. Baggage storage services are offered, ideal for those with layovers or wanting to explore the area without suitcases.
On-site services include standard facilities such as toilets, and the terminal features Auracast broadcast audio, which assists passengers with hearing impairments by transmitting audio directly to compatible hearing aids or earpieces. For those driving, there is on-site parking, including paid parking lots. Passengers can also use the parking area for short-term waiting. The airport building itself contains a small café and retail kiosk, though options are limited compared to larger airports.
The Black Sea region around Zonguldak is known for its lush green landscapes, steep hills, and coal mining history. Zonguldak province has been a centre of coal extraction since the 19th century, and the industry still shapes the local economy. Natural attractions include the Yedigöller National Park (Seven Lakes), about 80 km inland, a popular spot for hiking, camping, and autumn foliage. The nearby town of Safranbolu, a UNESCO World Heritage site, features well-preserved Ottoman-era architecture, with its distinctive saffron-coloured houses, cobbled streets, and covered bazaars.
Along the coast, visitors enjoy Black Sea beaches, seafood restaurants, and the historic town of Amasra, located about 50 km east of the airport. Amasra is renowned for its picturesque harbour, Byzantine castle, and Roman bridge. The region's cuisine is influenced by the sea and mountains, with dishes like hamsi (anchovy), mıhlama (cornmeal and cheese fondue), and various black cabbages. The climate is humid and mild, with abundant rainfall that keeps the forests vibrant year-round. Travelers come for both business—particularly related to mining, energy, and port activities—and leisure, drawn by the unspoiled nature and cultural heritage.
Zonguldak Çaycuma Airport is not open every day; its operating hours align with flight schedules, which vary seasonally. Passengers should confirm flight times and terminal access via the official website or by calling the airport directly at +90 372 618 24 57. The website provides up-to-date information on arrivals, departures, and ground transport.
The airport has a single terminal building. Check-in counters and security open approximately two hours before scheduled departures. Arrivals are on the ground floor. Given the limited daily flights, it is advisable to arrive with plenty of time. The telephone number is the best way to reach airport staff for enquiries about lost property, parking, or special assistance.
For those driving, the paid parking lot operates on an hourly and daily rate. Payment can be made by cash or card at the booth. While the airport lacks a hotel on site, accommodation is available in nearby Çaycuma town and Zonguldak city, ranging from small guesthouses to business hotels. Shuttle services to these locations can be arranged through car rental offices or local travel agencies.
