I've never seen such a uniquely beautiful airport! It's an open-air airport with stunning views and park-like areas to relax in. There are plenty of restaurants and shops to explore as well. The only downside is that it can get quite hot during the summer.
One of the cutest and most eco-friendly airports I have used. It looks like a botanical garden and the staff is fabulous too especially the way they treated and helped my wife when she was stung by a bee. Would love to use it again.
Unique experience. The airport is built to make passengers feel relaxed and comfortable (maybe except for the tiloilet facilities) - it gives you a resort-like feeling. It also has hundreds of shops with souvenirs, clothes, coffee shops, restaurants and offers complimentary drinks and snacks on at least some of the gates. Well done, Koh Samoi!!
Koh Samui Airport (USM) is renowned for its unique, beautiful open-air, resort-like design, providing a relaxed and stress-free travel experience. The major benefit for flyers is that Bangkok Airways (PG) provides complimentary access to its Boutique Lounge for all economy class passengers. This free lounge access offers a comfortable escape and includes a good selection of free food and beverages, such as light snacks, sandwiches, pastries, dim sum, coffee, and soft drinks. This feature is widely considered a significant and highly valued perk, distinguishing the pre-flight experience at USM.
Samui Airport (USM) is an international airport located on the island of Koh Samui in Surat Thani Province, Thailand. It serves as a key gateway for tourists traveling to the Gulf of Thailand's popular beach destination. The airport handles a mix of domestic and international flights, primarily from airlines such as Bangkok Airways, which operates a hub here, and seasonal charters from various Asian and European carriers. Its open-air terminal buildings are designed in a tropical style, with gardens and walkways connecting gates.
Samui Airport provides a range of facilities to assist passengers. Confirmed amenities include:
The airport does not list additional amenities such as lounges, restaurants, or shopping in the confirmed data, but the terminal has a few snack bars and souvenir shops. Passengers can expect basic services suitable for a regional airport.
Samui Airport is not open 24/7. It operates during daylight hours, with peak periods around 5–6 pm. Specific opening and closing times vary by season and flight schedule; passengers should confirm with their airline. Samui Airport is situated in the northeast of Koh Samui, approximately 2 km from the popular Chaweng Beach area. It plays a critical role in connecting the island to mainland Thailand and international destinations, particularly for tourism. Koh Samui is known for its palm-fringed beaches, luxury resorts, and vibrant nightlife. The airport also serves as a transit point for travelers heading to nearby islands such as Koh Phangan (famous for its full moon parties) and Koh Tao (a diving hotspot).
Unlike larger hubs, Samui Airport is a single-terminal facility with a relaxed atmosphere. Its design reflects local architecture, with wooden roofs and open-air spaces that allow natural ventilation. The airport's runway is relatively short, accommodating primarily turboprop aircraft and narrow-body jets. Due to the island's popularity, the airport can become crowded during peak tourist seasons, especially late afternoon when multiple flights arrive and depart.
Transport options from Samui Airport include taxis, shared minivans, and private car hires. The airport is a short drive from most major resorts. Taxis are available outside the arrivals area, with fixed fares to various zones on the island. Rental cars and scooters can also be arranged at the airport, but visitors should note that driving in Samui can be hectic. For budget travelers, songthaews (shared pickup trucks) run along the main road but may not stop directly at the airport. Walking to nearby hotels is feasible if staying in the Bo Phut area.
Samui Airport may lack the extensive amenities of larger international hubs, but it offers a pleasant, efficient experience suited to its role as a resort gateway. For a smooth journey, arrive at least an hour before domestic flights and two hours before international departures.
