Busiest on Mondays around 12 pm — usually as busy as it gets.
Such a cute tiny airport on the edge of Kruger national park. We even saw monkeys crossing the runway.
This airport is amazing! We booked a day before to Johannesburg instead of driving about 6 hours. It takes less than an hour to get there. This airport is so small and it's amazing. We checked in our bag and walked a few feet away to the gate. The bathrooms are clean and they have a waiting area with snacks. They have a small security check and before we knew it we were off!
The airport is clean , people are friendly BUT there is no internet , every single time I fly here the workers give me a different reason !!!! This is not right , your taxes are high, very high , you can afford a WiFi connection. Be serious with your business because we are serious when we use your facilities . Thank you ( bosses I'm waiting for a reply )
Hoedspruit airport is called Eastgate airport. It's a small airport outside Hoedspruit. They do direct flights from Johannesburg, Cape Town and many more. You can rent cars at the airport and there's shuttle services. There is a restaurant where you can order coffee, beer, juice and light meals like croissants, muffins, cookies, wraps, burgers and pies. The food is good and all the cakes are baked there. The coffee is good and they have a wine list. There's a gift shop where you can buy some gifts. The toilets are clean and the atmosphere is good. It takes you about 20min to get to the airport from Hoedspruit.
Hoedspruit Airport, also known as Eastgate Airport, sits in the Limpopo Province of South Africa, roughly 15 kilometres south of the town of Hoedspruit and about 500 kilometres northeast of Johannesburg. It operates primarily as a gateway for safari travellers heading to Kruger National Park and private game reserves, but it also serves local commuters and cargo flights. The airport has a single asphalt runway (5,020 feet) and a compact terminal that handles scheduled flights from Johannesburg (OR Tambo) and Cape Town, plus frequent charter operations. Despite its small size, the airport processes a steady flow of passengers, especially during peak safari season from May to September.
Hoedspruit Airport is accessible by road from several directions. From Hoedspruit town centre, the drive takes about 15 minutes along the R40 and R531 roads. From Johannesburg, the journey is around five hours by car (450 kilometres) via the N12 and N4, then the R40 north towards Hoedspruit. Many visitors arrive on organised transfers from safari lodges, which often include a meet-and-greet at arrivals. Alternatively, shuttle services operate between the airport and nearby towns like Phalaborwa (90 km northeast) and Nelspruit (200 km south). Rental car companies including Avis, Budget, and First Car Rental have desks in the terminal; booking ahead is recommended, as demand can outstrip supply. Uber and other ride-hailing apps are not reliable in this region, so pre-arranged pickups or taxis from the rank outside the terminal are safer options.
The terminal at Hoedspruit Airport is straightforward and functional. Upon arrival, passengers walk directly from the aircraft to a single arrivals hall. There is a small luggage carousel and a basic customs area for international charter flights — though most traffic is domestic. The departures area features a check-in hall with a single security checkpoint, a departure lounge with seating for about 80 people, and an airside café called The Boma that serves light meals, coffee, and drinks. Confirmed facilities include a wheelchair-accessible car park, wheelchair-accessible toilet, and a changing table in the accessible toilet, making the terminal usable for passengers with mobility needs. Baggage storage is available — ask at the information desk near arrivals. The busiest times are Monday through Thursday around midday, when flights from Johannesburg and Cape Town tend to arrive and depart in quick succession. Passengers should expect a relaxed pace; staff are friendly but there can be queues during peak hours. There is no ATM inside the terminal, so bring cash for the café or for tips — the nearest ATM is in Hoedspruit town. The overall atmosphere is calm and unhurried, fitting the bushveld setting.
Hoedspruit sits at the heart of South Africa's premier safari region, surrounded by some of the country's most iconic wildlife reserves. The airport's primary role is to funnel visitors into Kruger National Park — the largest game reserve in South Africa, covering nearly 20,000 square kilometres — as well as private reserves such as Timbavati, Klaserie, and Sabi Sand, which together form part of the Greater Kruger ecosystem. These reserves are home to the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo) as well as cheetah, wild dog, and over 500 bird species. The region is also culturally rich: the nearby town of Hoedspruit serves as a base for the Mapungubwe World Heritage Site, an ancient kingdom that flourished between AD 900 and 1300, and the Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, which offers educational tours about conservation. Beyond wildlife, the area offers adventure activities like hot-air ballooning over the bushveld, white-water rafting on the Blyde River Canyon, and hiking through the Drakensberg escarpment. The Blyde River Canyon, also known as the Motlatse Canyon, is the third-largest canyon in the world and a major scenic attraction. For those interested in history, the nearby town of Pilgrim's Rest offers a glimpse into the gold rush era of the late 19th century. The region's economy relies heavily on tourism and agriculture, with citrus and game farming being major industries. Visitors often remark on the stark contrast between the dry winters (peak season) and the lush green summers (low season, but good for birding). The airport effectively anchors this tourism flow, providing a direct link from major cities without the long drive from Johannesburg. Most visitors spend at least three days in the area to fully appreciate the wildlife and landscapes.
Hoedspruit Airport (Eastgate Airport) is not open 24 hours; it operates during daylight hours, typically from 06:00 to 18:00, though flight times may extend these hours. Check with your airline for specific timing. The airport is closed on Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Contact the airport directly at +27 15 793 3681 or visit http://www.eastgateairport.co.za/ for flight schedules and service updates. There are no hotels inside the airport, but several lodges and guesthouses are within a 10-minute drive. For connecting with your safari vehicle, it helps to coordinate with your lodge in advance — many offer free pickups. A key practical tip: bring mosquito repellent and apply it before leaving the terminal, as the bushveld environment brings mosquitoes, especially after rain. Also, carry small denominations of South African rand for tips and incidentals, as card payment may not be accepted everywhere. If you are on a tight itinerary, book your seat on the flight to Hoedspruit early, as seats sell out quickly during peak months.
