Please note the photos on the overview is NOT correct. The Nelspruit Airport and Kruger Mpumalanga International (KMI) airport is not the same place. We incorrectly searched for Nelspruit Airport and since we saw the KMI photos assumed we are driving to the correct place. We got lost in a rural area with gravel roads and it could have been a serious situation. We lost two hours of our time and could easily have missed our flight. Hopefully somebody will correct the photos - not knowing the area it was an easy mistake to make.
It used to be the main official Air Port in Nelspruit. Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport is now the officially made an International Airport.
Nelspruit Airport (IATA: MQP) serves the city of Mbombela (formerly Nelspruit), the capital of South Africa's Mpumalanga province. It is a regional airport catering primarily to domestic flights, charter operations, and general aviation. The airport acts as an alternative gateway to the famous Kruger National Park and the surrounding lowveld region, handling a modest but steady flow of tourists, business travellers, and local residents. While larger carriers operate from Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport about 20 kilometres north, Nelspruit Airport offers convenient access for those flying smaller aircraft or seeking a closer drop-off point to the city and southern park gates. The facility is compact, focused on efficiency, and supports the region's tourism and agricultural economy.
Nelspruit Airport is situated approximately 5 kilometres south of Mbombela's city centre, just off the R40 road. This location makes it easily reachable by car, taxi, or pre-booked shuttle. The airport is well connected to the N4 highway, which links Johannesburg (about 330 kilometres west) and Maputo in Mozambique (roughly 150 kilometres east). Travellers arriving from the Kruger Park can reach the airport via the Numbi or Phabeni gates in about 40 to 50 minutes, while those coming from White River or Hazyview have a straightforward drive south. The airport offers a car park with designated wheelchair-accessible spaces, and the terminal entrance is barrier-free. For those without private transport, metered taxis and ride-hailing services are available in Mbombela, though pre-booking is recommended. Nearby cities and towns include Nelspruit, White River, Hazyview, and Barberton.
Nelspruit Airport provides essential amenities for passenger comfort. The terminal features a wheelchair-accessible car park, a step-free entrance, and accessible toilets, ensuring ease of movement for all travellers. Baggage storage is available, which is particularly useful for visitors planning a day trip or layover in the area. The airport's toilets are kept clean and functional. While there are no confirmed restaurants or shops within the terminal, passengers can find basic food and refreshment options within a short drive of the airport, especially in the nearby city centre. The peak operating hours fall between 11:00 and 12:00, suggesting that flights are concentrated around midday. Staff are on hand to assist with check-in, luggage, and general enquiries.
Mpumalanga is one of South Africa's most scenic provinces, known for its dramatic landscapes and abundant wildlife. The region is dominated by the Kruger National Park, one of Africa's largest game reserves, home to the Big Five and countless other species. Beyond Kruger, the Panorama Route offers breathtaking views of the Blyde River Canyon, Bourke's Luck Potholes, and several waterfalls such as Lisbon Falls and Mac-Mac Falls. The climate is subtropical, with hot, humid summers and mild, dry winters. Agriculture plays a major role: the area around Nelspruit produces citrus fruits, mangoes, avocados, macadamia nuts, and sugarcane. Culturally, the region is rich in Shangaan, Ndebele, and Swazi heritage, with local villages and craft markets providing authentic experiences. Visitors come to Nelspruit for both leisure and business, including conferences at the Mbombela Stadium and exploration of the Lowveld National Botanical Garden.
