A small airport with a big heart. PXO is clean, calm, and delightfully human-focused - f.i., chairs for the elderly right by check-in, genuinely kind and patient security staff, a vending machine by the gate that actually works and comfy leather armchairs with a lovely view on the runway. Everyone I met, from the cafe to the souvenir shop, was warm and attentive. It is the many little things that made this one of the most pleasant airport experiences I have ever had. A perfect farewell from a magical island. Thank you
Crossing the security on this Airport was just crazy. The security person was very antipatic, rude and arrogant. I already travel around several airports in Europe, and nothing was compared to this small Airport in Porto Santo. If you can, avoid this destination. Otherwise, be prepared for really arrogant people on the security control.
Ridiculous airport. Nobody wants to work or help you if your flight is cancelled or something similar. You even get laughed at. The only nice people were a woman in the cafe who helped us and a man from security. The rest can be thrown in the bin. The staff there don't know the words help or information, they should all be ashamed of themselves. Especially at the ,,info desk"...
A first for the books! For the first time in a lifetime there was no one in line when we went through security to board or PXO to LIS easyJet flight. Officers were extremely courteous and in a jiffy we had the whole departure hall for ourselves. Bathroom was immaculately clean and are located to the left of the only snack-bar / coffee shop - Specially - Good To Goo. The cafe has a spacious seating area with an outside patio overlooking the ocean and the runway. Unfortunately, Ibersol cannot justify keeping it open during the winter. Currently, out of PXO there are flights to: Lisbon - easyJet, TAP Air Portugal, SATA Azores Porto - Privilege (Spanish flag carrier), SATA Azores Funchal - Binter London, Gatwick - TUi Manchester - TUi Milan/Bergamo - Alba Star Copenhagen - TAP Air Portugal Unfortunately, most flights are seasonal and are operating during the winter season. Year round, only daily connection to Funchal on Binter and a weekly flight to Denmark.
Porto Santo Airport (PXO) is the sole air gateway to the island of Porto Santo, part of Portugal’s Madeira archipelago. This modest yet efficient airport primarily serves leisure travellers heading to the island’s famous golden sand beach and tranquil environment. The airport handles scheduled and charter flights from mainland Portugal and several European cities, with a strong seasonal peak during the summer months. Despite its small terminal, the airport is equipped to manage the flow of passengers arriving for a beach holiday or exploring the island's volcanic landscapes. Its single runway and compact layout make for a straightforward arrival and departure experience, with all facilities within easy walking distance.
Porto Santo Airport is located on the southeastern coast of the island, roughly 2 km from the main town of Vila Baleira. The airport sits at a low elevation close to the shore, offering views of the ocean on approach. Getting to and from the airport is simple: taxis are readily available outside the arrivals area, and rental car desks operate within the terminal. Several local bus routes connect the airport to Vila Baleira and other resorts along the coast, making it possible to reach your accommodation without a car. The drive to the town centre takes less than 10 minutes. For those staying elsewhere on the island, the airport’s compact size means no lengthy transfers — the entire island is only about 11 km long and 6 km wide.
The terminal provides essential amenities for a smooth journey. The airport is fully wheelchair-accessible, with designated parking spaces, level entry, and accessible toilets. A free parking lot is available for both cars and bicycles, a rare perk at regional airports. Inside, passengers will find clean public toilets (including baby changing facilities) and a baggage storage service — useful for those with a late flight who want to explore the town without luggage. There are no on-site restaurants or shops, but vending machines offer snacks and drinks. The airport’s small scale means that check-in, security, and boarding gates are all close together, minimising walking time. Peak passenger flow occurs around 11 am and 2 pm, so plan to arrive at least an hour before your flight during these times.
Porto Santo is famed for its 9 km stretch of golden sand beach — one of the few natural sandy beaches in the Madeira region. The island’s mild subtropical climate makes it a year-round destination, with summer temperatures averaging around 25°C and winter rarely dropping below 15°C. Beyond the beach, visitors can explore the volcanic interior, including the Pico do Facho viewpoint and the island’s golf course, designed by the Spanish golfer Severiano Ballesteros. The main town, Vila Baleira, boasts a historic centre with the Christopher Columbus House (the explorer’s wife was from Porto Santo) and a marina lined with seafood restaurants. The island is also popular for water sports, hiking, and cycling. Despite its small size, Porto Santo has a relaxed atmosphere distinct from the busier main island of Madeira, attracting travellers seeking a quiet beach escape.
Porto Santo Airport is not open every day; its operating hours are aligned with flight schedules, so always check the website or with your airline before travelling. The airport can be reached by phone at +351 291 980 120. For flight information and parking details, visit the official website: https://www.aeroportoportosanto.pt/pt/pxo/home. Passengers should note that the terminal does not offer overnight facilities for those with early or late departures. The free parking lot is convenient for short stays, but long-term parking is limited. For a stress-free experience, confirm your flight timing and consider arriving early during peak hours (11 am–2 pm). With its simple layout and essential services, Porto Santo Airport provides a low-hassle entry to one of Portugal’s most charming island destinations.
