Busiest on Mondays around 4 pm — usually as busy as it gets.
Small & very convenient Airport. Great parking space. Also nice restaurant with terrace watching the runway. Would be great if there were more flights. We would it a lot in favour of Weeze, Eindhoven & Schiphol
Was here on a open day, everything was organized well, fun activities and good information as well.
Great airport with all necessary features. However, there is still plenty of opportunity for more flights and routes or to take flights from Schiphol, since Schiphol is operating at full capacity. Nevertheless, Eelde is a great airport which also houses many flight schools etc. Even spotters can have some fun here.
Small airport, you don't have to wait long for your hold luggage, it literally rolls off the belt after your walk from the plane to the terminal. Restaurant is pricey, check in goes nice an smooth. There is not much to do after the security apart from one very small shop and toilet facilities. WiFi is available but very small. 2 gates in total. From the plane out of the building can take less than 10 minutes due to efficient security (2 desks) going out of the airport. In all, the airport is a bit dated and needs some modernisation but this airport is a necessity for commuters from (and to) the north of the Netherlands .
Groningen Airport Eelde is a small international airport located in the northern Netherlands, serving the province of Drenthe and the city of Groningen, the largest urban center in the north of the country. The airport primarily handles leisure charter flights to Mediterranean holiday destinations such as Spain, Greece, and Turkey, as well as a limited number of scheduled services operated by airlines like Transavia and Corendon. Its modest size—one single terminal—makes it a convenient and stress-free option for travellers from the northern regions, who might otherwise have to drive to Amsterdam Schiphol or other larger hubs.
The airport is known for its efficient, passenger-friendly atmosphere. With relatively short queues and quick walking distances between check-in, security, and gates, it appeals to families and travellers who value simplicity. Business travellers also use the airport for seasonal connections and private flights. Groningen Airport Eelde plays an important role in regional connectivity, supporting tourism and local economic activity in Drenthe and Groningen.
Groningen Airport Eelde is situated about 10 kilometres south of the city of Groningen, near the villages of Eelde and Paterswolde. The exact address is Machlaan 14a, 9761 TK Eelde. The airport is easily accessible by car via the A28 motorway, which connects to the A7 and A37. There is a paid parking lot directly in front of the terminal, with spaces for both short-term and long-term parking. The car park includes designated accessible bays for blue badge holders.
Public transport options include bus line 9, which runs from Groningen central station to the airport stop. The journey takes approximately 30 minutes and buses operate on days with scheduled flights. For more flexibility, taxis and ride-sharing services are available from the city centre. Given the region’s flat landscape and extensive cycle paths, some local travellers even reach the airport by bicycle. The airport is also well connected for those arriving from Assen, Emmen, and across the northern provinces.
Groningen Airport Eelde offers a compact but functional range of facilities to meet passenger needs. The terminal is fully accessible: there is a wheelchair-accessible car park, entrance, and toilet, ensuring comfort for travellers with reduced mobility. Baggage storage allows passengers to store luggage and explore the area during long layovers or before check-in. For families, the airport provides baby changing tables and clean toilets throughout the terminal.
Although there is no large shopping area or full-service restaurant within the confirmed amenities, the airport does offer on-site services such as car rental desks (several major agencies operate there) and a small café that provides basic snacks and drinks. Free Wi-Fi is typically available, allowing passengers to stay connected. The departure lounge is simple but adequate, with seating areas and flight information screens. Passengers should note that food options are limited, so it may be wise to bring snacks if you have specific dietary needs.
The airport sits in the province of Drenthe, a region renowned for its prehistoric dolmens (hunebedden), heathlands, and extensive cycling routes. The nearby city of Groningen—the capital of the province of the same name—is a vibrant student city with a historic centre, the Martini Tower, and numerous museums and cultural venues. The region’s economy is diverse, with a strong agricultural sector as well as a significant natural gas industry: the Groningen gas field, one of the largest in the world, has been a major factor in the local economy for decades.
Travellers arriving at the airport can easily reach the Wadden Sea coast, a UNESCO World Heritage site, or explore the nature reserves of Drenthe, such as the Dwingelderveld and the Drents-Friese Wold. The area is particularly popular for outdoor activities: hiking, cycling, and birdwatching. In winter, some visitors come for the Elfstedentocht skating event (held in occasional severe winters) or simply to enjoy the peaceful countryside. Groningen Airport Eelde thus serves both tourists heading to beach resorts aboard and those wanting to discover the northern Netherlands.
The airport does not operate every day; its opening hours align with flight schedules, which are typically concentrated in the late afternoon. Passenger peak hours are around 4 pm and 5 pm, when several departing flights are scheduled. Travellers are strongly advised to confirm their flight times and check the airport’s website for the latest opening hours, especially if arriving early or departing outside normal business periods.
For any questions, the airport’s information desk can be contacted during operating hours. Always verify details with your airline or the airport directly before travel, as services may change seasonally.
