Great. A quick trip across and back again. They fly up to force 9 winds. They're storm-tested here. Restrooms and lounges with plenty of space. Parking within walking distance. Right at the airfield. There are short- and long-term parking spaces. If the ferry is so expensive and the journey takes so long, you might as well fly.
Cool stuff. A 5-minute flight and you're already in Juist. It's a daily routine for the employees here. The fun isn't exactly cheap, so I wish some of them had a bit more charm, but that's probably the cheerful North German nature that starts the vacation. Otherwise, everything went well.
If you fly sideways, you'll see more ! It was very pleasant flying with you. Very relaxed check-in! The pilot seemed confident, and it was a short and enjoyable flight. Thank you so much!
Booked a flight to Juist and back. A highlight for young and old. We'd love to come back on our next visit. We felt safe and well looked after.
Norden-Norddeich Airport (IATA: NOD) is a small regional airport located on the North Sea coast of Lower Saxony, Germany. It serves as a vital gateway to the East Frisian Islands (Ostfriesische Inseln), a chain of seven inhabited islands known for their sandy beaches, dunes, and Wadden Sea landscape. The airport is primarily used by inter-island air services operated by small propeller planes, such as the Island Air (Inselflieger) flights that connect Norddeich to the islands of Juist, Norderney, Baltrum, Langeoog, Spiekeroog, and Wangerooge. Many tourists and residents rely on these flights for quick connections, especially during the summer season or when ferry schedules are less frequent. The airport also handles private general aviation traffic and medical emergency flights.
Norden-Norddeich Airport is situated approximately 4 kilometres north-west of the town of Norden, directly on the coast at the Norddeich district. The address is Flugplatz Norden-Norddeich, Dörper Weg 47, 26506 Norden. The airport is easily reachable by car via the B72 or local roads. There is a dedicated car park with both standard and wheelchair-accessible spaces right next to the terminal. For those using public transport, the Norddeich train station (Norden-Norddeich Bahnhof) is about 1.5 kilometres away, served by regional trains from Norden and Emden. From the station, you can take a taxi or local bus to the airport; the journey takes under 10 minutes. Many passengers also combine a flight with a ferry trip from the nearby Norddeich harbour to the islands. The nearest major city is Emden, about 20 kilometres south-west, while the state capital Hanover is roughly 200 kilometres to the south-east.
While Norden-Norddeich Airport is modest in size, it provides essential facilities for passengers. The terminal is wheelchair-accessible, with a dedicated entrance and a wheelchair-accessible car park located close to the building. Inside, there are toilets available for travellers. There is no on-site restaurant or café, but vending machines may be present. For flight check-in and baggage handling, the airport has a small counter staffed by the operating airline. Given the short duration of island flights (typically 15–30 minutes), passengers are advised to arrive only slightly ahead of departure time. The airport does not have a lounge or extensive shopping, so plan accordingly. Parking is free for short stays, and there are bicycle racks for those arriving by bike.
The airport is located in the East Frisia region (Ostfriesland), a low-lying coastal area known for its dykes, windmills, tea culture, and the Wadden Sea, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The main draw for travellers is the chain of East Frisian Islands, each offering a unique atmosphere. Juist is famous for its long sandy beach, Norderney for its lively resort town and spa, Baltrum for its quiet charm, and Langeoog for its car-free environment. The Wadden Sea mudflats attract birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts for guided walks. The mainland area around Norden features traditional Frisian villages, the historic market square in Norden, and the Seehundstation (seal station) in Norddeich. The region is also known for its mild maritime climate and is a popular destination for families, cyclists, and wellness travellers. Flights from Norden-Norddeich provide a quick transfer to the islands, especially convenient for day trips or for those carrying excess luggage that might be cumbersome on ferries.
The airport is not open every day; operations are tied to flight schedules, which vary by season. Typical peak hours are around 10:00–11:00 in the morning, when multiple departures to the islands occur. It is essential to check the current flight times on the official website before travelling. For inquiries, you can call 04931 93320. The website https://www.inselflieger.de/ provides up-to-date flight schedules, booking, and information on the airline services. There is no on-site accommodation, but nearby Norden and Norddeich offer various hotels and guesthouses. Note that security checks are minimal due to the small size of the aircraft; passengers walk directly to the apron. Always confirm baggage restrictions with your airline, as aircraft have limited capacity.
