Gan International Airport (IATA: GAN, ICAO: VRMG) serves as the main gateway to Addu City, the southernmost atoll of the Maldives. Originally built as a Royal Air Force station during World War II, it was later converted to civilian use and expanded to handle international flights. The airport plays a vital role in connecting the southern region of the Maldives to the capital Malé and to international destinations, particularly charter flights from Europe and Asia. It is also a hub for domestic travel within the archipelago, with regular flights to and from Malé and other atolls. The single runway and compact terminal reflect the airport's role as a regional hub, handling a modest but steady flow of passengers.
Gan International Airport provides a range of facilities designed to be accessible and convenient for all passengers. The terminal is equipped with wheelchair-accessible features throughout, including a wheelchair-accessible car park, entrance, and toilet. This ensures that travellers with reduced mobility can navigate the airport with ease. For families, the airport offers a changing table in the restrooms, making it easier to care for infants and young children. Baggage storage is available for passengers who need to store their luggage temporarily, whether for a layover or a day trip to the nearby town of Hithadhoo. Standard toilet facilities are also available. Note that the airport does not have a wide array of shops or restaurants, so passengers may want to bring their own snacks or plan meals accordingly.
Based on flight schedules, the busiest times at Gan International Airport are around 2 pm and 6 pm. These peaks typically coincide with arrivals and departures of flights to and from Malé and international charter services. During these hours, the terminal can become crowded, and queues at check-in and security may be longer. It is advisable to arrive at least two hours before a scheduled departure during peak periods. The airport is not open 24 hours a day, so passengers should confirm access times with their airline or the airport directly if they have an early morning or late-night flight.

Gan International Airport is situated on Gan Island, the southernmost island of Addu Atoll. Addu City is the second-largest urban area in the Maldives and has its own distinct culture and history. The airport serves both tourists heading to resorts in the southern atolls and local residents travelling to and from Malé. It also supports cargo operations and occasional military or humanitarian flights given its strategic location near the equator. The surrounding area offers attractions such as the Addu Nature Park, historical sites from the British military presence, and some of the best diving and snorkelling in the Maldives. While the airport itself is small, it functions as a crucial link for the southern region, providing an alternative to the main Velana International Airport in Malé.
