Good domestic airport
Thank you for the review.
Nice airport. Very green. Perfect for domestic airplanes in Maldives. Only facility I saw was toilet. No water refill or any other counter to buy anything. So be prepared when arrive. But there is a shop & eating place just outside of the terminal
Thank you for the review.
Kadhdhoo airport also called Iskandharu air base. Best domestic airport in Maldives
This isn't an international airport currently now though, isn't it? Or does it just accept private jets with no commerical flights.
Thank you for the review.
Kadhdhoo International Airport sits on the small island of Kadhdhoo in Laamu Atoll, roughly 260 kilometres south of Malé. The airport functions as the main air gateway for the atoll, serving domestic flights from Malé and occasional international charters. Its single runway handles turboprop aircraft such as the Dash 8 and ATR 72, and the terminal is compact enough that passengers walk from the aircraft to the arrivals hall in under a minute. The airport is not open every day of the week, so flight schedules are limited and advance booking is essential.
The airport occupies a narrow strip of land between the lagoon and the ocean, characteristic of the Maldives' island geography. While it gained international status in 2020, the vast majority of traffic remains domestic. For travellers heading to resorts or local islands in Laamu Atoll, Kadhdhoo is the primary arrival point, replacing longer speedboat transfers from Malé.
Kadhdhoo International Airport is not connected to any city by road. Reaching the airport requires flying from Velana International Airport (MLE) in Malé. The flight time is approximately 50 minutes. Two airlines operate scheduled services: Maldivian and Manta Air. Flights depart several times daily, but the frequency varies by season. During peak tourist season (November to April), there are typically four to six daily flights; in the low season, service may be reduced to two or three. Booking at least a week in advance is recommended, especially for passengers requiring wheelchair assistance or travelling with infants.
Once at Kadhdhoo, the only way to travel between the airport and nearby islands is by speedboat or dhoni (traditional Maldivian boat). The airport jetty is a short walk from the terminal. Speedboats to Gan, the largest island in Laamu Atoll, take about 20 minutes and cost around 100 MVR per person one way if shared, but private transfers arranged by resorts are more common. Resorts in Laamu typically include airport transfer in their package, so check with your accommodation before booking separately.
For those arriving on a private yacht or visiting the atoll by sea, the airport does not have a dedicated seaplane dock. However, seaplanes can land at the lagoon and passengers are ferried ashore by small boat. This is rarely used because Kadhdhoo itself is not a seaplane base; the nearest seaplane hubs are in Malé.
The terminal at Kadhdhoo International Airport is a single-storey building designed for efficiency. On arrival, passengers deplane directly onto the tarmac and walk into the arrivals hall, where baggage claim consists of one carousel. The hall is air-conditioned but can become crowded when multiple flights land within a short window. Baggage generally appears within 15 minutes of landing.
Departures are equally straightforward. Check-in desks are located immediately inside the entrance. There are two counters, and the process is manual — no self-service kiosks. Security screening involves a walk-through metal detector and X-ray for bags; staff are thorough but courteous. The waiting area after security has seating for about 50 passengers. There are no duty-free shops or restaurants inside the secure zone, though a small café operates in the check-in hall. Bring snacks and water if you have a long wait.
The airport provides several accessibility features. Wheelchair-accessible entrance and car park are available, as well as a wheelchair-accessible toilet. There is also a gender-neutral toilet and a changing table in the restroom. Passengers requiring wheelchair assistance should request it from their airline when booking.
The atmosphere inside is functional and unhurried. Flights are announced over a loudspeaker, and boarding begins 20 minutes before departure, with passengers walking to the aircraft. The building is clean and well-maintained, with tiled floors and painted walls in neutral colours. Lighting is fluorescent, and the air conditioning can be chilly, so a light jacket is useful.
Laamu Atoll, where Kadhdhoo Airport is located, is one of the southern atolls of the Maldives, known for its lush vegetation and strong local culture. Unlike the more developed Malé region, Laamu retains a sense of isolation. The atoll consists of 82 islands, of which only 15 are inhabited. The remainder are either resorts or uninhabited.
The largest island in Laamu is Gan, which has a population of around 3,000 people. Gan is connected to Kadhdhoo by a causeway — actually a series of bridges and roads linking several islands. This causeway is a remarkable feat of engineering, stretching over 10 kilometres and connecting Kadhdhoo, Fonadhoo, Maandhoo, and Gan. Visitors can hire bicycles or scooters to explore these islands, which offer a glimpse of traditional Maldivian life away from the resort bubble.
Laamu is culturally distinct. The atoll has a history of Buddhist settlement before the conversion to Islam in the 12th century. Archaeological remains include an ancient Buddhist monastery on Gan, though little is visible today. The local dialect of Dhivehi differs slightly from that spoken in Malé. Fishing and boatbuilding remain central to the economy; the atoll is famous for its dhonis handcrafted from coconut wood.
Marine life in Laamu is exceptional. The atoll's eastern reef drops steeply into the deep ocean, attracting manta rays, whale sharks, and turtles. The Laamu Atoll Marine Protected Area covers a large area, and several resorts offer guided snorkelling trips. Surfing is also popular, with breaks at Thundufushi and Gaadhoo that produce long, consistent waves during the southwest monsoon (May to October).
For those seeking a less touristy Maldives, Laamu provides an authentic experience. Local guesthouses on Gan, Fonadhoo, and Maandhoo offer budget accommodation. The islands are walkable, and the pace of life is slow. The airport's presence has made Laamu more accessible, but it remains far quieter than the resorts of North Malé Atoll.
The airport is not open 24 hours a day. Operating hours are typically from 06:00 to 18:00, but these can change based on flight schedules. Confirm your flight time with the airline and plan to arrive at the airport no more than 90 minutes before departure, as there is little to do while waiting.

There is no ATM at the airport. Bring sufficient Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR) in cash for boat transfers and incidentals. Credit cards are accepted at the café but not for the airport service charge (which is paid in cash upon departure).
One specific piece of advice: if you are flying out of Kadhdhoo after a stay on a local island, confirm your boat transfer timing carefully. The airport is small, and missing your flight can mean a delay of many hours or even days, as seats on later flights are limited.
