Reminiscing a work-related journey into one of the remotest site in Sarawak, ie Ba'kelalan. I considered myself lucky to have arrived here, to explore the small town and also experience the daily life of the people here. The airport is very simple and relaxed, but service is efficient. Flight service is only 3times a week. That means, once you arrived here and if you wanted to take the flight back to Lawas, you will have to stay at the small town of Ba'kelalan for the next 2 or 3 days, before you can board the next flight. Alternatively, is the bumpy road ride through the muddy road that was built for logging purposes, which will take about 8hrs to reach Lawas town. That was how we went back, cos' we couldn't wait for the next flight. It was indeed a once in a lifetime experience for me, that I will fondly reminisce.
Of all the small airports I have visited in my life, the Ba'kelalan airport is probably the most impressive and fascinating STOL airports. Here's the amazing part - the airport is managed by the locals who run businesses around Buduk Nur village. So, when a flight is coming, they casually walk to the airport, put on their uniforms and wait for the flight. After the flight lands, passengers get off, they load the plane and so on, passengers get on, and when the plane takes off, they go back to their main jobs. Like a shopkeeper, a homestay owner, a restaurant owner, handyman and so on. How cool is that! Wow!
Small airport inside the rain forest, only 3 flight available per week and limited to 9 passengers.
Very friendly staffs and RELA
Ba'kelalan Airport (IATA: BKM) is a small domestic airport serving the remote highland settlement of Ba'kelalan in the northern part of Sarawak, Malaysia, on the island of Borneo. It is one of the region's Rural Airports, a network of short-runway airstrips that provide vital air links to otherwise inaccessible interior communities. The airport primarily handles flights operated by MASwings, the rural air service arm of Malaysia Airlines, using small turboprop aircraft such as the DHC-6 Twin Otter. Ba'kelalan Airport is a gateway for travellers visiting the Kelabit Highlands, an area known for its traditional longhouse communities, rugged terrain, and trekking routes. Due to its location and limited infrastructure, flights are subject to weather conditions and demand, with frequency varying throughout the year.
Ba'kelalan lies near the border with Indonesia (Kalimantan) and is one of several airstrips that connect the interior highlands to the coastal city of Miri (MYY). The airport plays a crucial role in supplying goods, medical evacuations, and transport for locals and tourists alike. The region is sparsely populated, with most settlements accessible only by foot, river, or air. The Kelabit people, the indigenous inhabitants, rely heavily on these flights for daily necessities and travel. For passengers, Ba'kelalan Airport offers a unique glimpse into rural aviation in Borneo, where airstrips are carved into the landscape and flights often operate against a backdrop of dense jungle and rolling hills.
Ba'kelalan Airport is a minimal facility, reflecting its role as a small rural airstrip. According to confirmed information, the airport provides the following accessible features:
The terminal itself is compact, with basic seating and limited shelter. There are no shops, restaurants, or ATMs on site. Travellers should bring any food, water, or cash they may require, as services are extremely limited.
Ba'kelalan Airport does not operate every day of the week. The airport is active primarily on days when flights are scheduled, which vary by season and demand. Peak hours at the airport are observed at 7:00 PM and 9:00 PM, likely corresponding to flight arrivals or departures. Outside of these times, the terminal may be unattended or closed. Passengers should confirm flight schedules with their airline and arrive accordingly. Given the remote location, it is advisable to arrange ground transport in advance; there are no public transport links. Access to the airport is by a narrow road leading from Ba'kelalan village, which is a short distance away.
For inquiries, passengers can contact the airport directly via the following:
This number is the airport's administrative line. Because staff may be limited and schedules irregular, it is best to call during operational hours or to check with your airline (MASwings) for the most up-to-date flight information. There is no official website listed for the airport.
Ba'kelalan Airport may lack the conveniences of larger airports, but it offers a direct connection to one of Borneo's most culturally and naturally significant regions. With proper preparation, your transit through BKM will be smooth.
