The nearest major city is Miri, situated about 160 kilometres to the northwest as the crow flies, but the journey by road is far longer and impassable during wet weather. By air, the flight from Miri takes roughly 55 minutes in a twin-engine turboprop aircraft.

To reach the airport from Miri, you must book a seat on one of the daily MASwings flights — booking in advance is strongly recommended as seats are limited, especially during peak travel periods. Upon arrival at Bario Airport, ground transport options include pre-arranged hotel pickups, local taxis (often informal), or walking if your accommodation is nearby. There is no public bus service. For those driving, the airport has a small car park, but note that driving to Bario from elsewhere in Sarawak is impractical except for the most adventurous travellers.
