Pleasantly surprised! Despite the negative reviews, in May 2025 we found a small but cozy and clean airport. Restrooms were tidy, cafes were nice, and everything felt well maintained. The bus stop is now equipped with benches, shade, vending machines, and trash bins - very comfortable even at midday. Buses are modern and air-conditioned. And yes, even a local dog was there with food and water - a sweet little detail that made the whole experience feel warm and welcoming.
The airport is tiny and cozy, you feel really comfortable there, no stress at all. Check-in is quick, there's even a spot to charge your phone, one "duty free" shop, and a small bistro. It gives off the vibe of a converted bus station turned into an airport, haha, but I really liked it! No chaos, no stress.
Small airport with not that many options to pass the time or sit, especially after security control. You can take the bus to several places, including Trapani city/port for 5 euros per person, the bus goes almost every hour. You can buy tickets online or directly when entering the bus from the driver. There are many taxis also that will approach you while waiting for the bus, making offers for 10-7 euros per person to the city.
Small airport.Parking is right in front of the terminal, so it's convenient. Inside, everything you need is close by -- check-in desks, car rental companies, food options, and clean restrooms. There are no long lines or stressful crowds, and the staff are friendly and helpful.
Trapani-Birgi Airport (also known as Vincenzo Florio Airport) serves the western coast of Sicily, primarily the provinces of Trapani and Marsala. It is a compact regional airport that handles both domestic and seasonal international flights, mainly operated by low-cost carriers. The airport is a convenient gateway for travellers heading to the historic city of Trapani, the Egadi Islands, the salt flats of Paceco, and the wine-producing region of Marsala. With a single terminal, it offers a straightforward travel experience, though its operating hours are limited, and it is not open every day. Passengers should plan accordingly, especially during off-peak seasons.
Trapani-Birgi Airport is located about 10 kilometres south of Trapani and 15 kilometres north of Marsala, near the town of Birgi. The airport sits on the western tip of Sicily, close to the Mediterranean coast. By car, the airport is accessible via the A29 motorway (Palermo–Mazara del Vallo), taking the exit for Trapani-Birgi. The journey from Trapani city centre takes approximately 15 minutes, while from Marsala it is about 20 minutes. There is a paid parking lot on-site, with both short-term and long-term options. For those without a car, bus services connect the airport to Trapani and Marsala, with timetables often aligned with flight arrivals. Taxis and ride-sharing services are also available. The closest major city is Palermo, about 100 kilometres to the east, but the airport primarily serves the local area rather than as a hub for long-distance travel.
Despite its modest size, Trapani-Birgi Airport offers a range of essential amenities for passengers. The terminal is wheelchair-accessible, with a dedicated wheelchair-accessible car park, entrance, and toilet, ensuring ease of movement for travellers with reduced mobility. There are standard toilets available, including a changing table for families with infants. Baggage storage is available on-site, a useful service for those who wish to explore the area without their luggage. The airport also provides on-site services such as a small bar or café (confirmed as part of the general services). The paid parking lot is clearly signposted and offers both covered and uncovered spaces. Due to the airport's limited operating hours, some facilities may not be available during all hours; it is advisable to check ahead for specific needs.
The area served by Trapani-Birgi Airport is renowned for its natural beauty, history, and cuisine. The salt flats of Trapani and Paceco, with their windmills, are a distinctive feature of the landscape, producing sea salt for centuries. The historic town of Erice, perched atop Mount Erice, offers medieval streets and panoramic views. The Egadi Islands—Favignana, Levanzo, and Marettimo—are a short ferry ride from Trapani and are popular for their crystal-clear waters and quiet coves. Marsala, known for its fortified wine, also boasts a historic centre and archaeological sites from the Phoenician and Roman periods. The region's Mediterranean climate makes it a year-round destination, with summer attracting beachgoers and spring and autumn ideal for cultural tourism. The airport plays a key role in connecting this relatively remote part of Sicily with mainland Italy and European cities.
The airport is not open every day, and its peak hours are reported to be around 9 pm and 10 pm, suggesting that flights are concentrated in the evening. Operating hours may vary seasonally, and some days the terminal may be closed entirely. Travellers should consult the official website (https://www.airgest.it/) or contact the airport directly at +39 0923 610111 to confirm hours and flight schedules. The website provides detailed information on flights, parking, and services. It is worth noting that due to the limited schedule, passengers should arrive with ample time before their flight, as services like baggage storage and the café may not be available outside of flight times. The paid parking lot is managed by the airport and requires payment, typically via automated machines or online. For those relying on public transport, bus and taxi services operate in conjunction with flight arrivals, but schedules can be sparse outside of peak periods.
