The airport serves the entire area around Crotone well, and while it is small, it functions decently. However, there is room for improvement. For instance, adding more seating would prevent passengers from having to stand while waiting, and installing information screens would help keep travelers updated on boarding times.
I wanted it to be a good review, but sadly that's not the case. The flights are cheap, the airport was clean, except toilets. Watch out for the broken speaker, it has scared me. :) The area will get crowded very quickly and you can find only 16 chairs in total, at least before the security check. The airport has only 2 departures in a whole day and they managed to get them delayed. Everyone had to wait in the area smaller than the actual plane and just a few staff can speak English/German. That's the norm here in Crotone though. If you want to get out of the airport you have to either rent a car, taxi or get on the only 2 busses a day.
Very small airport. There is a bus going to Crotone with 1,80 euros and the taxi is around 30 euros but there are not many waiting
They are saving budget with scheduling departures and arrivals on same time, which causes massive overcrowding. One of the worst small airport on whole continent.
Crotone-Sant'Anna Airport "Pythagoras" sits on the Ionian coast of Calabria, 13 kilometres south-east of the city of Crotone, serving a region where tourism remains modest but the beaches and archaeology draw a steady stream of Italian and European visitors. Named after the ancient Greek mathematician who founded the nearby colony of Kroton, the airport is compact and functional, handling seasonal flights from a handful of European cities and domestic routes from Milan and Rome. It is one of three commercial airports in Calabria, alongside Lamezia Terme and Reggio Calabria, and offers the most direct access to the province's eastern coastline.
The airport lies just off the SS106 Jonica, the main coastal road connecting Reggio Calabria to Taranto. From Crotone city centre, the drive takes about 15 minutes via the SP49. A regular bus service, operated by Autolinee Romano, runs between Crotone's central bus station (near the train station) and the airport, timed to coincide with flight arrivals and departures. The journey takes 20 minutes and costs around €2. Taxis are available from the taxi rank outside the arrivals area; a trip to Crotone costs roughly €20–25. There is no direct train or metro connection. For those driving, the airport has a car park with about 200 spaces, including designated disabled bays. Car rental desks for Avis, Hertz, and Europcar are located in the arrivals hall.
The terminal is a single two-storey building with separate arrivals and departures on the ground floor. Check-in desks are on the left as you enter, with security screening beyond. The departures lounge is small but adequate, with seating for about 100 passengers. A bar and a small shop selling snacks, drinks, and local products (olive oil, wines, and Calabrian specialties) are available. Free Wi-Fi is provided throughout. The airport is fully wheelchair accessible, with ramps, adapted toilets, and a wheelchair-accessible car park. There is a baby changing table in the accessible toilet. Baggage storage is available at the information desk for €5 per bag per day. The atmosphere is relaxed and rarely crowded, though the busiest times are Monday and Thursday afternoons, and Tuesday midday, when flights to Milan and Rome are scheduled. Security screening is efficient but can be slow if multiple flights coincide; arriving 90 minutes before departure is recommended.
The airport's official location is Isola di Capo Rizzuto, a town of about 18,000 people that stands on a promontory overlooking the Ionian Sea. The name "Isola" (island) is misleading — the town occupies a peninsula that forms the southern boundary of the Gulf of Taranto. Its main claim to fame is the Capo Rizzuto Marine Protected Area, established in 1991 to safeguard one of the Mediterranean's most biodiverse stretches of coast. The reserve covers 14,000 hectares of sea and coastline, with crystal-clear waters, sea caves, and underwater archaeological sites. Snorkelling and diving trips operate from the beaches of Le Castella and Capo Rizzuto.
Le Castella itself is a small fishing village within the municipality of Isola di Capo Rizzuto, dominated by the Aragonese Castle, a 15th-century fortress built on a tidal island connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway. The castle is one of Calabria's most photographed landmarks and houses a small museum of maritime history. The village's sandy beach, backed by pine groves, is a popular summer destination.
Further inland, the town of Isola di Capo Rizzuto preserves a historic centre with narrow streets, a 17th-century cathedral, and several baroque palaces. The local cuisine emphasises seafood — anchovies, swordfish, and bottarga (cured fish roe) are staples — and a strong pastoral tradition produces pecorino cheese and cured meats.
For history enthusiasts, the nearby Capo Colonna Archaeological Park, 10 kilometres north of Crotone, contains the remains of the ancient Greek city of Kroton, including a single standing column of the Temple of Hera Lacinia. The park also has a museum displaying artefacts from the Magna Graecia period.
Why do people fly here? Many are Italian holidaymakers heading to beach resorts along the Costa dei Tramonti. Others come for the marine park, the Greek ruins, or the quiet pace of life that contrasts with busier Italian destinations. International visitors are few, which adds to the region's authentic appeal.
The airport is not open 24 hours. It opens approximately two hours before the first flight and closes after the last arrival, typically operating between 6:00 and 22:00. The busiest periods are Monday afternoon and Tuesday midday, when multiple departures coincide. Check the website (http://www.crotoneairport.it/) for current flight schedules and any temporary closures. Phone: +39 0962 794801.
Parking costs €2 per hour for the first two hours, then €1 per hour. A daily maximum of €10 applies. Electric vehicle charging points are available in the car park.
One concrete piece of advice: if your flight is early in the morning or late in the evening, pre-book a taxi in Crotone, as buses run only during flight times and the taxi queue can be short. The number for the official taxi cooperative is displayed in the arrivals hall.
