Busiest on Mondays around 11 am — usually busy.
New building and clean. Young staffs are very friendly and helpful. Maintenance of the terminal building should be considered since today to keep it clean and steady. After pandemic when tourism market getting recover, this airport would be more busy. 40-50 minutes flight time from Toraja to Makassar must be nice and worthy. I hope I could visit Toraja again by plane from Makassar.
one of the airport with the best natural view that i have ever been to. this airport is only visited by ATR type aircraft with limited schedule. although through this airport travel distance can be shortened considerably (makassar-rantepao by car approximately 8 to 10 hours, by plane only 50 minutes or 1 hour 15 minutes from balikpapan to rantepao), the road from the airport is badly damaged due to faults movement. you just need to prepare your travel's plan well.
The airport is closed and has no flights this has been the case for weeks. No flights until the middle of August. However all the airlines still sell tickets to and from. It's crazy.
Relatively new airport, great view, clean, located few km before Makale.. Great!
Toraja Airport, officially known as Pongtiku Airport, sits 17 kilometres south of Rantepao, the administrative centre of Tana Toraja Regency in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The single-runway airport connects this highland region to Makassar via daily flights operated by Wings Air and Citilink, with typical journey times of about 40 minutes. For travellers arriving from across the archipelago, the brief flight offers the quickest alternative to an eight-hour drive over winding mountain roads.
Rantepao, the main town and transport hub of Tana Toraja, lies roughly 30 minutes by road from the airport. The most common way to cover the distance is by car or minibus. Local drivers at the terminal offer fixed fares for the trip, usually between 100,000 and 150,000 Indonesian rupiah depending on negotiation and passenger count. Alternatively, many hotels arrange airport transfers for guests; booking this in advance saves time and ensures a driver waits at arrivals. Public transport between the airport and town is limited to occasional minibuses (angkot) that run along the main road, but these are infrequent and not recommended for first-time visitors carrying luggage. The road itself is sealed and well-maintained, winding through green hills and past traditional Torajan houses whose distinctive boat-shaped roofs appear often along the route.
The terminal at Toraja Airport is compact and straightforward. Upon arrival, passengers walk from the aircraft across the tarmac to a single-level building that handles both arrivals and departures. Check-in counters open two hours before scheduled departures; arriving earlier than that may mean waiting outside as the terminal itself is not open continuously. The facility provides a wheelchair-accessible entrance and car park, as well as toilets including a wheelchair-accessible toilet. Security screening is efficient, with a single x-ray machine and metal detector. The waiting area has bench seating for roughly 60 people. Food and drink options are limited to a small kiosk selling snacks, instant noodles, and bottled water. Passengers are advised to carry their own refreshments, especially on flights that might be delayed. The atmosphere is quiet and unhurried, typical of a regional Indonesian airport serving a small number of daily flights.
Tana Toraja Regency is one of Indonesia’s most culturally distinctive regions. Located in the highlands of South Sulawesi, it is home to the Toraja people, whose traditional belief system, aluk todolo, and elaborate funeral rites draw anthropologists and travellers from around the world. The landscape is marked by steep hillsides carved into rice terraces, bamboo forests, and villages where tongkonan houses—with their sweeping, saddle-shaped roofs—stand in orderly rows. Visitors come primarily to witness or participate in funeral ceremonies that can last several days and involve buffalo sacrifices, processions, and the placement of the deceased in cliff-side burial sites. Key locations include Lemo, where stone facades are carved into cliffs to house the dead; Londa, a cave cemetery with coffins and effigies; and Kete Kesu, a village famous for its tongkonan and hanging graves. The region also offers trekking routes through rice paddies and coffee plantations, as well as a vibrant market in Rantepao every Tuesday and Saturday where textiles, handicrafts, and local produce are sold. Despite increasing tourism, Tana Toraja retains a strong sense of tradition, and the airport serves as its primary link to the outside world.
Toraja Airport is not open around the clock. Its operating hours correspond to flight schedules—typically from early morning until mid-afternoon. The airport’s website and phone contact are not consistently available for public inquiries; information is best obtained through airline offices or travel agents in Makassar. The busiest times, based on flight patterns, are Monday at 11 am, Tuesday at 1 pm, Wednesday at 11 am, and Thursday at 9 am. Plan to arrive at least 90 minutes before departure for domestic flights. One concrete piece of advice: bring cash in small denominations for transport and snacks, as ATMs inside the terminal are unreliable and the nearest bank is in Rantepao.
