Mentawai Airport is located in Mentawai Islands Regency, West Sumatra, Indonesia. The airport's architectural design looks modern with interesting structural elements, such as large pillars that support the roof at unique angles. There is large red writing at the top that says "MENTAWAI AIRPORT," making it easy to spot from a distance. The area in front of the airport looks clean and tidy, with a small garden covered with various green and red ornamental plants that beautify the landscape. The natural and beautiful impression can be seen from the tropical plants that grow abundantly around the building, reflecting the natural beauty of the Mentawai Islands. Overall, this airport has a modern appearance but is still in harmony with the natural surroundings, giving a comfortable and welcoming impression to visitors who come to this region.
At the time of this post, the airport entrance was still from the old airport, and the maximum passenger capacity was 12 people. To get there from Tuapejat, you can take the Damri bus, which, if I'm not mistaken, costs 20,000 Rupiah from Tuapejat to the airport. This Damri bus also serves the Sioban-Tuapejat route. So, for those of you who want to get to the airport from Sioban, you can also do so. However, I don't know the exact Damri bus schedule. The new airport is still under construction. The schedule is twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with a ticket price of 357,000 Rupiah per person.
Airport in Mentawai Islands Regency with one airline, Susi Air. The airport is clean & small. There is a prayer room, children's play area, & BMKG earthquake monitor. There are no mini markets or food courts like that yet
Rokot Sipora Airport (IATA: ROK) is a small domestic airport serving the Mentawai Islands Regency in West Sumatra, Indonesia. Located on Sipora Island, it is the main air gateway for travellers heading to the world-famous surf breaks and remote beaches of the Mentawai archipelago. The airport primarily handles scheduled flights from Padang (Minangkabau International Airport) operated by small regional airlines like Wings Air and Susi Air, using turboprop aircraft such as the ATR 42 or similar. Given the limited capacity, the airport caters mostly to surf tourists, researchers, and local residents. The airport's peak hours are notably in the evening (8 PM and 9 PM), which corresponds to the arrival of the last flights from Padang. It is not open every day, so advance planning is essential.
Rokot Sipora Airport lies on the eastern coast of Sipora Island, about 5 kilometres north of the regency capital, Tuapejat. The airport's single runway runs parallel to the coast, surrounded by coconut palms and jungle. Access to the airport is via a paved road that connects to Tuapejat and other parts of the island. Most visitors arrive by taxi or hotel transfer from Tuapejat, a drive of roughly 10–15 minutes. For those staying at surf resorts on the western coast of Sipora or neighbouring islands (North Pagai, South Pagai, and Siberut), boat transfers to Sipora's main port (often Tuapejat) are common, then a short car ride to the airport. The airport is also the closest point for travellers heading to the famous surf breaks of the Mentawai Islands, such as Lance's Left, Macaronis, and Playgrounds, which are reached by surf charter boat from the airport's nearby anchorage.
Rokot Sipora Airport is a basic but functional facility. The terminal is a single-storey building with an open-air waiting area, a check-in counter, and a small arrival hall. Confirmed amenities include:
There are no restaurants, cafes, or shops inside the terminal. However, a small warung (local food stall) often operates just outside the airport entrance, offering simple snacks and drinks. Free Wi-Fi is not available, and ATMs are absent; bring enough Indonesian rupiah in cash to cover any expenses. The airport has a single luggage carousel for arrivals. Given the limited size, passengers should expect minimal queue times but also a lack of frills.
The Mentawai Islands are a chain of about 70 islands and islets off the western coast of Sumatra, known as one of the world's premier surf destinations. The islands feature consistent swell, warm water, and a variety of reef breaks that attract surfers from around the globe. Sipora Island, where the airport is located, is the administrative and transport hub of the regency. The Mentawai people have a distinct culture, with traditional tattoo art and animist beliefs still practiced in some villages. Beyond surfing, the region offers pristine rainforests, unique wildlife (including the Mentawai macaque and endemic birds), and world-class diving. The best time to visit is during the dry season from April to October, when waves are more predictable and rainfall is lower. Travelers should also note that the islands are remote; internet and mobile reception can be patchy outside Tuapejat.
Rokot Sipora Airport is a small but crucial link to one of Indonesia's most spectacular island chains. With basic facilities and limited operations, it serves its purpose as a no-frills gateway for those seeking adventure in the Mentawai Islands.
