Wed, 11/12/2024 First time using this airport. Well, for everyone who wish to visit Tanjung Puting national park, the fastest way is via this airport. There are some flights to Jakarta, Semarang, and Surabaya daily flight. It's located inside the air force base. To reach this airport is easy because there are so many ways to do but to get out of this airport is relatively difficult because no one ride hailing accepted to pick-up passengers and parking fees is pricey 10k IDR for car but cheaper for motorbike. The building is quite small and no aviobridge to the aircraft. This could be a disadvantage if rainy season. Also the building itself only consist of one floor and 2 gate for departure. When I was there and did the first security check, the officer clarifying about 2 bottles inside suitcase and ordered to open and make sure that wine I brought still not yet opened, though it's kinda weird for me since in Surabaya and Bali was totally fine. Ckeck-in was smooth as well then once again passing through second security check to go inside waiting lounge. Luckyly our aircraft parked in front of the boarding gate and soon after officer commenced boarding process after all passengers deboarded.
There is nothing to complain about the airport, it's a basic airport who can get all things done. BUT the passengers who just arrived from ahmad yani airport (31/03/2025) has such bad attitude like putting their legs in on top of their thighs, munching on smelly snacks, really noisy on the aircraft while we are mid air and they had the audacity to put their suitcase on their lap even though IT'S A BASIC KNOWLEDGE TO PUT YOUR STUFF IN THE OVERHEAD CABIN . I've been going in and out from this airport since I was a baby and this is the first time I saw such a bad attitude from the passengers. I don't know where they are from but it looks like it's their first time leaving semarang by air but I guarantee you that those guys are not from semarang or pangkalan bun.
Small airport located at Pangkalanbun, Central Kalimantan. Plus point that it has a small shop selling instant hot coffee inside the departure hall.
The only airport close to Tanjung Puting National Park. There are Trigana Air, Wings Air, Nam Air, and Trans Nusa operated in this airport, that would take your roundtrip to Jakarta, Surabaya, Semarang, Palangka Raya, Sampit etc. Always checking for the weather around for the flight here sometimes got delayed caused by smoke air pollution on dry season. But overall, this airport is good!
Iskandar Airport, also known as Pangkalan Bun Airport (IATA: PKN, ICAO: WAGI), serves as the primary aviation gateway for West Kotawaringin Regency in Central Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo. The airport handles domestic flights connecting the region to major Indonesian cities such as Jakarta, Surabaya, and Semarang. It is a vital transport hub for travelers heading to Tanjung Puting National Park, one of the world’s most renowned orangutan conservation areas. The airport is relatively small but well-equipped for its role, accommodating both tourists and local residents. Flights are operated by airlines such as Citilink, Nam Air, and Wings Air, with turboprop and narrow-body aircraft.
Iskandar Airport is situated approximately 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) southeast of Pangkalan Bun town center, the capital of West Kotawaringin Regency. West Kotawaringin Regency lies in the southern part of Central Kalimantan, a province on the island of Borneo. The region is defined by vast tropical rainforests, winding rivers, and a rich biodiversity. The primary draw for visitors is Tanjung Puting National Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and a premier destination for seeing wild orangutans. The park is accessible by a 30-minute drive from the airport to the port of Kumai, followed by a klotok (houseboat) journey up the Sekonyer River. Camp Leakey, a research station within the park, offers close encounters with rehabilitated orangutans.
Beyond wildlife, the area is known for its Dayak heritage, traditional longhouses, and vibrant local markets. Pangkalan Bun itself serves as a logistical hub for the palm oil and mining industries, which are significant economic drivers. The climate is tropical with high humidity; the dry season (April–October) is the best time for travel.
Travelers should note that the airport is a single-terminal facility with basic services. Plan ahead for food and drinks, as dining options are limited. For those connecting to river tours, pre-arranged transfers are highly recommended.
