Banjarbaru City Airport – officially known as Syamsudin Noor Airport – serves as the main air gateway to South Kalimantan, Indonesia. Located about 25 kilometres east of Banjarmasin, the provincial capital, and just five kilometres from the centre of Banjarbaru, this international airport handles both domestic and international flights. Arrivals & Departures

The airport operates a single passenger terminal, with arrivals and departures clearly separated. After deplaning, passengers walk through a bright corridor before reaching immigration counters (for international flights) and baggage belts. Customs inspection is straightforward, and exit doors lead directly to the public transport and parking area.

Security screening is efficient, though it can be busier during the two busiest periods: around 2 am and again at 6 pm. The 2 am rush is fuelled by early-morning flights – mostly budget carriers heading to Jakarta, Surabaya, and other domestic hubs. The 6 pm period sees a wave of evening departures, including international services to Malaysia and Singapore. Passengers are advised to arrive at least two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international ones, particularly during these peak times.

South Kalimantan is rich in natural resources – coal, rubber, palm oil – and the airport plays a crucial role in connecting business travellers and tourists to the area.

Geographically, the airport sits on the flat, swampy lowlands of the Barito River basin. The climate is tropical, with high humidity and rainfall throughout the year. The nearby city of Banjarbaru, originally a planned administrative centre, has grown into a bustling urban area, while Banjarmasin (the larger city) is famous for its floating markets and riverine culture. Many visitors use Syamsudin Noor as a starting point to explore the Dayak villages of the interior, the diamond mines of Cempaka, or the marine parks of the Java Sea.

Despite being designated an international airport, most traffic is domestic. International flights currently connect to Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, with charter services to other Southeast Asian destinations during peak holiday seasons. The runway, at just over 2,500 metres, can handle narrow-body jets like the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320. Plans for a new terminal and runway extension have been discussed, aiming to turn the airport into a larger regional hub.
