Gannavaram Airport close to Vijayawada and Andhra New Capital Amaravathi. Decent facilities and long way to go and develop into true world class International airport. Hope to see best facilities soon, as the new terminal under construction.
I recently visited Vijayawada Airport and had a pleasant experience overall. The airport is clean, well-maintained, and organized. The outdoor area is beautifully landscaped with flowering plants, which gives a nice welcoming vibe. There are multiple ATMs (SBI, Union Bank) available right outside, which is very convenient for travelers. The canopy roofing outside the terminal offers good shade and the seating arrangements are decent. Security and check-in seemed efficient, and the staff were helpful. It's a compact airport, so everything is easy to locate. The overall ambiance is calm and neat--perfect for both arrivals and departures. Definitely one of the better regional airports I've visited. Looking forward to seeing more development in the future! Rating: 4.5/5
Vijayawada International Airport (VGA) is located in Gannavaram, Vijayawada around 16 km from the city centre serving the capital of Amaravati. However, as far as connectivity is concerned, it is very well connected with NH 16. Apart from the availability of shared auto, travelers can also avail the service of City buses which drop passengers till the junction on the highway. I was impressed with the cleanliness. There are actually different terminals for domestic and international flights. However, the only international flight to Sharjah stopped its operations a couple of years back. The present domestic terminal is beautifully decorated depicting the regional culture of Andhra. It handled 1.06 Million passengers in FY 2023-24. Hence, a bigger and integrated terminal is under construction which is taking shape.
Small airport but neat. Speed check in process . Friendly staff. Due to digi yatra things became easy to do check in . Price of flight is high from Vijayawada as less flights . out of everything is nice
Vijayawada International Airport, also known as Gannavaram Airport, serves the city of Vijayawada and the surrounding region of Andhra Pradesh. It operates as a hub for both domestic and international flights, connecting passengers to major Indian cities and select international destinations. The airport handles a mix of business travellers, tourists, and pilgrims heading to nearby religious sites. With modern infrastructure and a single terminal, it efficiently manages passenger flow, though peak hours around 6 pm and 7 pm can see increased activity.
The airport is located in Gannavaram, approximately 20 kilometres northeast of Vijayawada’s city centre. Its position along National Highway 65 makes it easily accessible by road. The journey from Vijayawada’s main railway station or bus stand takes about 30 to 45 minutes in normal traffic.
By Car or Taxi – Prepaid taxis, app-based cabs, and private cars are the most convenient options. The airport has a paid parking lot for those driving themselves. Auto-rickshaws are also available but less comfortable for longer distances.
By Bus – Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) runs regular services from Vijayawada to Gannavaram, with a stop near the airport entrance. Local buses are frequent but may be crowded during peak hours.
Nearby Cities – Guntur (about 40 km), Eluru (60 km), and Machilipatnam (70 km) are also within driving range, making the airport accessible for a wider regional catchment.
The airport offers a range of passenger amenities designed for comfort and accessibility:
Note that the airport does not operate 24/7; it opens and closes according to flight schedules, so passengers should plan arrivals and departures accordingly.
Vijayawada, often called the “Business Capital of Andhra Pradesh,” sits on the banks of the Krishna River. The region is known for its fertile agricultural lands, especially rice paddies, and is a major centre for commerce, education, and industry. The nearby Krishna Barrage and Prakasam Barrage are notable engineering landmarks.
Tourists often use the airport as a gateway to several attractions:
The region’s cuisine features spicy Andhra flavours, with dishes like Gongura chutney and Pulihora (tamarind rice). The climate is tropical, with hot summers and moderate winters; the best travel months are from October to March.
