Nice place and can communicate in English
Despite being supposed to open at 10 pm this evening, it was impossible to get in. What a shame, I drove all the way there to see the place where I did my basic training. But there won't be a second attempt!
A truly beautiful museum. Upon request, you can easily sit in the aircraft and, if you wish, receive very detailed explanations on all sorts of questions related to aircraft technology.
Access and parking are OK. The restaurant/bar is open and serves good food and drinks. I have no idea how to get to the hangars ;-)
Rothenburg/Görlitz Airport, known locally as Flugplatz Rothenburg-Görlitz, is a regional airfield serving the historic town of Rothenburg and the nearby city of Görlitz in the eastern part of Saxony, Germany. Unlike major international hubs, this airport primarily caters to general aviation, flight training, and leisure flying. It is a favoured base for private pilots, glider enthusiasts, and small aircraft operators exploring the scenic landscapes of Upper Lusatia. The airport also supports occasional business flights and emergency services, but does not handle scheduled commercial airline traffic. Its modest size and quiet atmosphere make it a convenient entry point for travellers seeking to avoid the crowds of larger airports while accessing the cultural and natural riches of the German-Polish border region.
Rothenburg/Görlitz Airport is situated approximately 3 kilometres south of the town centre of Rothenburg (Oberlausitz) and about 20 kilometres northwest of Görlitz, the easternmost city in Germany. The airport lies in the district of Görlitz, within the state of Saxony, near the border with Poland. The Neisse River, which forms the border, flows just east of Görlitz, while the airport itself is located on relatively flat terrain typical of the Upper Lusatian lowlands.
By car, the airport is easily reachable via the B115 federal road, which connects Rothenburg to Görlitz and other towns in the region. From the A4 motorway (Dresden–Görlitz), take the Görlitz exit and follow signs towards Rothenburg. Parking is available on-site, and the airport features a wheelchair-accessible car park. Public transport options are limited; regional buses serve Rothenburg, but the airport itself is a short taxi or ride-hailing journey from the town centre. For those cycling, the area is crisscrossed with well-marked bike routes, though the airport is not directly on a major cycle path. Given its remote character, most visitors arrive by private vehicle or charter flight.
As a small regional airfield, Rothenburg/Görlitz Airport offers a limited but functional set of amenities focused on accessibility and basic comfort. Confirmed facilities include a wheelchair-accessible car park, a wheelchair-accessible entrance, and wheelchair-accessible toilets, ensuring that passengers with mobility needs can navigate the terminal area without difficulty. Standard toilets are also available for all visitors. These facilities are maintained to an adequate standard, though travellers should not expect extensive retail, dining, or lounge services. There are no confirmed on-site restaurants or shops; visitors are advised to bring their own refreshments or plan to eat in Rothenburg or Görlitz before or after their flight. The airport does not have a hotel, but accommodation is available in the nearby towns. The lack of commercial traffic means that security and check-in procedures are minimal, with a straightforward, relaxed environment.
The airport serves as a gateway to Upper Lusatia (Oberlausitz), a region known for its rich history, well-preserved medieval architecture, and rolling hills dotted with traditional villages. The twin cities of Görlitz and Zgorzelec (the Polish side) form a unique cross-border urban area, with Görlitz boasting one of the best-preserved old towns in Germany, featuring Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque buildings. The area is also popular for outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling, and canoeing on the Neisse River. To the south, the Zittau Mountains offer scenic trails and lookout points. Historically, Upper Lusatia was a centre of textile production and trade, and its cultural heritage is reflected in numerous museums and festivals. Travellers flying into Rothenburg/Görlitz Airport often do so for leisure tourism, attending events like the Görlitz Summer Festival or exploring the region's historic sites. The quiet airfield provides a convenient alternative to driving from Dresden or Berlin, especially for private pilots based elsewhere in Europe.
For up-to-date information on weather conditions, fuel availability, or operational status, check the official website or call ahead. As a non-commercial airfield, services are tailored to general aviation users, but visitors arriving by private aircraft will find a friendly, no-fuss environment ideal for starting an exploration of Saxony's eastern frontier.
