Ultra Low cost airport. Time for security 30 minutes. Staff is pleasant.
The security check took about 30 minutes (around 6 PM). The airport is very small, yet quite a lot of flights depart from here, so most people end up sitting on the floor because there are nowhere near enough seating areas. There are just about enough seats for one plane's passengers, not for seven-ten gates. The shops here already closed by 7 PM in case you want to buy something, but compared to other airports, the prices are a bit more reasonable (just a little).
Non-typical opinion: one of the best airports to start cycling journey: fast baggage handling, place to assemble bike and beautiful routes just outside airport. Danke fur alle mitarbeiter von Hahn Flughafen!
Porrly maintained. There was almost no options to eat for late flyers. So less sitting places, maybe just for 10% of passengers could find a seat while waiting at the gates.
Hahn Airport (IATA: HHN) is a former US Air Force base turned commercial airport located in the heart of the Hunsrück region in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. Originally built by the French occupation forces after World War II, it was taken over by the US Air Force in 1952 and served as a strategic military airfield until its conversion to civilian use in the 1990s. Today, Hahn Airport primarily serves low-cost carriers such as Ryanair and Wizz Air, as well as cargo operations. It acts as a secondary gateway for the Frankfurt metropolitan area and the broader Rhine-Main region, though it is geographically distant from Frankfurt itself. The airport’s passenger traffic is heavily seasonal, peaking during holiday periods, and its flight schedule is concentrated in the evening hours—peak times are typically around 8 pm and 9 pm.
The airport is a key transport hub for budget-conscious travellers visiting the Moselle wine region, the Rhine Valley, and the Eifel mountains, as well as for those seeking cheaper flights to and from western Germany. Despite its relatively remote location, Hahn Airport has carved out a niche as a no-frills alternative to Frankfurt Airport, offering competitive fares and quicker check-in processes.
Hahn Airport is situated in the municipality of Lautzenhausen, about 20 kilometres northwest of the city of Simmern and roughly 50 kilometres south of the Moselle River. It lies in a sparsely populated, hilly area characterised by forests and farmland. The nearest major cities are Frankfurt (about 120 km to the east), Luxembourg City (about 150 km to the west), and Cologne (about 170 km to the north).
By Car: The airport is easily accessible via the A61 motorway (exit Simmern or Kirchberg) and then by secondary roads. The drive from Frankfurt takes around 1.5 hours under normal traffic conditions. Paid parking is available directly in front of the terminal building, with short-term and long-term options. The car park is wheelchair-accessible, and designated spaces are provided for passengers with disabilities.
By Bus: A dedicated shuttle bus service, operated by Flibco and other regional providers, connects Hahn Airport with Frankfurt Main Hauptbahnhof (central station) and Frankfurt Airport. The journey takes roughly 1 hour 45 minutes. There are also bus connections to the nearby towns of Simmern and Kirchberg, as well as to Luxembourg City. No rail link exists at present, so bus services remain the primary public transport option.
By Taxi & Ride-sharing: Taxis are available outside the arrivals area, and ride-sharing services like Uber operate in the region, though availability may be limited during late hours. Given the airport's peak times in the evening, it is advisable to pre-book a taxi for off-peak arrivals.
The airport’s location is particularly convenient for those exploring the Moselle Valley wine route, with many vineyards and historic towns within a 30–60 minute drive. The Hunsrück region itself offers outdoor activities such as hiking and cycling, and the nearby Hahn Air Base memorial is a historic site for aviation enthusiasts.
Hahn Airport is a compact, single-terminal facility that places a premium on efficiency rather than extensive amenities. However, it covers the essentials for travellers passing through.
Accessibility: The terminal is fully wheelchair-accessible, with a dedicated wheelchair-accessible car park, entrance, and toilets. Passengers with reduced mobility can request assistance from their airline or the airport’s service desk. There are changing tables in the restrooms, making the airport family-friendly.
Parking: Paid parking is available in both short-term and long-term lots, with rates posted on the airport’s website. The car park is well-lit and monitored by CCTV.
Toilets: Clean and well-maintained toilets are located in the departures area and near the arrivals hall. They are equipped with baby-changing facilities.
Other Services: The airport offers basic on-site services including a small shop for snacks, drinks, and travel essentials. There is also a bistro or café near the departure gates, providing light meals and beverages. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the terminal, though connection speeds may vary during peak hours. No hotel is located on site, but several guesthouses and hotels can be found in nearby Lautzenhausen and Simmern.
Note that the airport is not open around the clock; its operating hours coincide with the flight schedule. Travellers should confirm their flight’s timing and plan to arrive no more than two to three hours before departure.
The Hunsrück region, where Hahn Airport is located, is a low mountain range in western Germany known for its rolling hills, dense forests, and picturesque villages. The area is less touristed than the neighbouring Rhine Valley or Moselle Valley, offering a quieter experience for nature lovers. The nearby Soonwald-Nahe Nature Park provides ample hiking trails, and the region’s rivers—the Nahe, Moselle, and Rhine—are famous for their scenic beauty and wine production.
The Moselle Valley, roughly 20 minutes north of the airport, is one of Germany’s premier wine regions, renowned for its Riesling wines. Historic towns like Cochem, Bernkastel-Kues, and Traben-Trarbach attract visitors with their half-timbered houses, castle ruins, and wine festivals. The city of Trier, about 100 km to the west, boasts Roman ruins including the Porta Nigra, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
For international visitors, Hahn Airport also serves as a convenient entry point for exploring Luxembourg (approximately 1.5 hours by car), Belgium’s Ardennes, or the Eifel region with its volcanic lakes and maars. The airport’s cargo operations support local industry, including the nearby logistics hub of Hermes and Amazon distribution centres.
Travellers should note that due to the airport’s remote location, public transport options are limited during late hours. If arriving on a late flight, pre-arranging a transfer or renting a car is recommended. The airport’s compact size makes navigation straightforward, and all facilities are within easy walking distance of the check-in and gates.
