The worst airport I have ever been too and I have been to a lot! Shocking employees so rude and unprofessional. The airport in it self is absolutely boring and dreadful to be inside. It doesn't also help that they are too cheap to turn on AC to cool the airport on a 30+ degree day. If you can avoid this airport all together and detour your travels elsewhere, do it! All they do is sit around and talk without doing they jobs. Which is shown in the photo.
Magnificent Loudois airport. Everything is top-quality. One round-trip flight per day to Paris Orly, in a magnificent little plane with all the necessary comforts. Even if when we're at Orly or elsewhere, unfortunately, the destination is "Le Puy-en-Velay" instead of "LOUDES."
This regional airport, or large airfield, is a boon for the tourism and economic development of the city of Le Puy and the surrounding area. It opens up the region and attracts investors and domestic and foreign tourists. It is imperative to invest in new infrastructure, BEPOS/HQE (High Environmental Quality), restore the airport's image, properly equip it to attract airlines and satisfy customers/passengers, and offer more services (PMR, private security, parking security, restaurants, shops, etc.). The managers must understand that it is in the region's interest, and therefore the general interest, to invest in such a major tool for economic and social development. Our elders knew how to do it, so we must maintain it and do it better. We note that the excellent French airline Twin Jet offers a flight to Paris, but could also offer flights to other cities, such as Rouen, Lille, Toulouse, Biarritz, Tarbes, Perpignan, Nice, Rennes, Brest, Cherbourg, Lanion, Calais, Corsica, etc.! In addition, international flights to sunny destinations during the winter could be introduced to attract investment and promote the region. This requires aviation enthusiasts and good salespeople.
Le Puy - Loudes Airport sits on the Volcanic plain of Velay, 10 kilometres west-northwest of Le Puy-en-Velay, serving as the primary air access point for the Haute-Loire department in south-central France. Operated by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Le Puy, this small regional airfield handles a handful of scheduled flights, general aviation traffic, and occasional charters, connecting a rural region of rolling hills and volcanic peaks with the national network. The single asphalt runway (15/33) extends to 1,350 metres, sufficient for turboprops and light jets, but not for large commercial aircraft. For passengers arriving from Paris or elsewhere, Le Puy - Loudes represents a quiet alternative to the larger airports at Clermont-Ferrand or Lyon — closer to the medieval heart of the city and the dramatic landscapes of the Auvergne.
Le Puy - Loudes Airport is located in the commune of Chaspuzac, roughly 15 minutes by road from central Le Puy-en-Velay. The most practical way to reach the airport is by private car or taxi. From Le Puy, take the D590 road westbound towards Loudes; after about 8 kilometres, follow signs for the airport at the village of Sanssac-l'Église. The final approach passes through open farmland, and parking is immediately adjacent to the terminal. Taxis are available from the Le Puy train station or city centre; the journey costs approximately €25 to €35 depending on the time of day. Bus service exists but is infrequent — the TPC (Transports en Commun de la Haute-Loire) line 12 runs between Le Puy and Loudes a few times daily, with a stop near the airport entrance, but schedules are designed for local commuters rather than flight connections. Cycling is possible but not recommended due to the lack of dedicated infrastructure and the rural roads. For those renting a car, major agencies operate at the airport on a limited basis; pre-booking is essential.
The terminal building at Le Puy - Loudes is compact and functional, covering the essentials without frills. On arrival, passengers walk from the tarmac through a single door into a modest hall that serves both departures and arrivals. The check-in area has a single desk; for scheduled flights, it opens one hour before departure. Security consists of a walk-through metal detector and X-ray machine — wait times are rarely more than a few minutes. The waiting area offers seating for about 30 people, with vending machines for drinks and snacks but no full café or restaurant. A well-maintained toilet facility is available, including a wheelchair-accessible toilet, and the entire terminal is wheelchair accessible via ramps at the entrance. There is no duty-free shop, no lounge, and no Wi-Fi (though mobile signal from French carriers is generally reliable). The atmosphere is calm and unhurried; passengers typically arrive within 45 minutes of departure with little stress. The airport confirms wheelchair-accessible car parking immediately outside the building. For those connecting to general aviation, the airfield has a separate hangar area and a small aviation club office.
Chaspuzac, the commune that hosts the airport, is a quiet village of around 800 people, built on the edge of the volcanic Devès plateau. Its location explains much about why this airport exists: the surrounding landscape — a mosaic of lava flows, green pastures, and ancient footpaths — attracts hikers, geologists, and pilgrims in roughly equal measure. The region's most iconic landmark is the Cathedral of Notre-Dame du Puy, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1998, whose black Madonna and striking Romanesque architecture draw visitors from across Europe. Nearby, the statue of Notre-Dame de France, cast from 213 Russian cannons captured at Sebastopol, stands 22 metres tall atop the Rocher Corneille, offering panoramic views of the city and the volcanic cones that dot the horizon. The area is also the heartland of France's lentil production — the green lentil of Le Puy has protected geographical status and appears on menus throughout the region. Travellers passing through the airport can, within a short drive, explore the medieval streets of Le Puy-en-Velay, walk the first stage of the Chemin de Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle (the Via Podiensis starts here), or visit the fortified hilltop village of Polignac with its massive keep. For outdoor enthusiasts, the Parc Naturel Régional du Livradois-Forez to the north offers volcanoes, forests, and lakes, while the gorges of the Loire and Allier rivers cut through dramatic canyons an hour east and west, respectively. The airport itself, while modest, serves as a convenient gateway for tourists seeking to avoid the crowds of more famous destinations — a place where a medieval cathedral stands on a volcanic plug, where lentils are celebrated with a festival each August, and where the pace of life remains tied to the agricultural calendar. Chaspuzac itself has a small church, a village hall, and a few farms; the airport is the community's most visible infrastructure, used by local flying clubs, emergency services, and the occasional holidaymaker arriving from Paris or Marseille.
Le Puy - Loudes Airport does not operate daily — its opening hours are tied to flight schedules and general aviation demand. The airport is generally open Monday through Saturday during daylight hours, but passengers should confirm their flight's departure time and terminal access in advance by calling +33 4 71 08 61 87. The airport's official website (aeroport-lepuy-loudes.com) provides a contact form and occasional updates, but information is best obtained via phone. There is no ATM on site; the nearest cash point is in the village of Sanssac-l'Église (2 km) or in Le Puy. Parking is free and ample, with designated spaces for disabled drivers. No fuel services are available for private aircraft without prior arrangement. The single practical tip for anyone using this airport: confirm your flight's departure time on the day — the airport does not operate daily, and flight schedules can change with little notice. Arriving 45 minutes before domestic departure ensures a relaxed passage through the compact terminal. For international departures, allow 90 minutes, as customs procedures (rare but possible for charter flights) require coordination with local authorities. In short, Le Puy - Loudes is the kind of airport that works beautifully when you plan ahead and proves inconvenient only when you assume it runs like a regional hub.
