Very small and easy airport to visit Lapland area out of Helsinki . Lot of comfort at the gate.
Our group of 10 arrived safely at Kuusamo Airport. We hurriedly took a few photos at the airport. I hadn't seen snow for many years and was very happy. I almost forgot the fatigue of the journey.
Relatively small airport, so you don't have to wait long for your luggage. I don't know for people who have to go through a passport check because I didn't have to. You might have to wait longer because I don't expect so many booths for passport control. The view was amazing stepping out of the plane in very snowy weather.
Little pretty airport with a small duty free and small food outlet. Check in and Security checks are efficient and fast. Car hire just outside baggage collection. Staff are friendly For more info and photos please visit my instagram mrsivyhyde
Kuusamo Airport (IATA: KAO) lies 6 kilometres northeast of Kuusamo town centre, in the heart of Finland's eastern Lapland. It is a regional airport with a single runway and a compact terminal that handles scheduled flights from Helsinki during peak seasons, as well as charter traffic for winter sports. The airport sits at the edge of a vast boreal forest, less than 50 kilometres from the Russian border, and serves as the primary air gateway for one of Finland's most popular outdoor recreation areas.
Kuusamo Airport is located about 6 kilometres from the town centre of Kuusamo. The drive takes roughly 10 minutes by car or taxi. There is no direct public bus service to the airport; however, local buses connect Kuusamo town centre with the Ruka ski resort, and some airport transfer services run during peak winter months. Taxis are available at the terminal for journeys to Kuusamo town, Ruka, or other nearby destinations. Renting a car is a practical option, as many attractions are spread across the region. Major car rental companies (Avis, Europcar, Sixt) have desks in the terminal or nearby. The airport car park is free and within walking distance of the terminal building.
The terminal at Kuusamo Airport is small but functional. Upon arrival, passengers walk directly from the aircraft to the baggage claim area, which is equipped with a single carousel. Security screening is efficient, with one lane operating during flight times. The departure lounge has seating, a small café offering coffee, snacks, and light meals, and a shop selling local products, souvenirs, and travel essentials. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the terminal. The airport is fully accessible: there is a wheelchair-accessible entrance, a wheelchair-accessible car park, and accessible toilets. A changing table is available in the accessible restroom. Baggage storage is offered for a fee, useful for those with a layover or needing to store luggage before exploring the region. The overall atmosphere is calm and unhurried, reflecting the airport's low traffic volumes. Wait times are generally short, but during peak school holidays or charter flight departures, the terminal can become crowded. It is advisable to arrive at least an hour before domestic flights and 90 minutes before international charters.
Kuusamo is a town of about 15,000 inhabitants, situated on the edge of the Arctic Circle in eastern Finland. It is best known for Ruka, one of the country's largest ski resorts, whose slopes begin just 25 kilometres north of the airport. Ruka offers over 30 slopes, extensive cross-country skiing trails, and winter activities such as snowmobiling, husky safaris, and aurora watching. During summer, the region transforms into a hiking and canoeing paradise, centred on the Oulanka National Park, 45 kilometres east of Kuusamo. The park's most famous trail, the 80-kilometre Karhunkierros (Bear's Ring), attracts thousands of hikers annually, passing through gorges, rapids, and old-growth forests. Kuusamo town itself has a relaxed, village-like atmosphere, with log-built churches, a local history museum, and outdoor markets selling reindeer meat, berries, and handcrafts. The airport plays a vital role in connecting this remote area to the rest of Finland and the world. Without it, the journey from Helsinki would take over eight hours by car or a combination of train and bus. The airport handles around 100,000 passengers annually, most of whom are seasonal visitors. During winter, flights from Helsinki arrive several times daily, while summer sees a reduced schedule. The airport also accommodates occasional direct charter flights from Central Europe, Russia, and the UK. Kuusamo's location near the Russian border has historically influenced its culture and economy; cross-border trade and cooperation are notable, though current geopolitical circumstances have reduced traffic. Despite its small size, the airport is efficiently managed by Finavia, the state-owned enterprise that operates Finland's network of airports.
Kuusamo Airport is open daily according to flight schedules. It does not operate 24 hours. Confirm opening times via the Finavia website or by phone. The busiest times are weekdays around mid-morning, especially Monday and Wednesday at 11 am and Tuesday at noon, when multiple departures are scheduled. For the most up-to-date flight information, check the Finavia website (www.finavia.fi) or call +358 20 7088801. There are no ATMs inside the terminal; bring cash or use card payments at the café and shop (cards are widely accepted in Finland). If you are flying out during winter, be prepared for possible delays due to snow or ice. The runway is well maintained, but de-icing can extend turnaround times. A practical tip: if you are heading to Ruka, arrange your airport transfer in advance during peak season, as taxis and shuttle services book up quickly. Alternatively, take a taxi to Kuusamo town and then catch the local bus to Ruka – a cheaper option that runs several times daily.
One final piece of advice: if you have a few hours between flights, consider visiting the Oulanka National Park visitor centre, just a 20-minute drive from the airport. It provides an excellent introduction to the region's trails and wildlife, and the scenery is genuinely spectacular.
