Small, comfortable and very friendly!
Kajaani airport is a tiny airport, very nice and comfy. Everything is fast, queues are unheard of.
This is just perfect small airport, with no stress and almost no waiting time expected. Don't know exactly the public transportation but if you want to make it easy - just order a taxi upfront. Only negative thing is you are not able to have anything to eat there. Coffee machine and some beverages in machine available.
Small clean organised and nice staff
Kajaani Airport lies seven kilometres northwest of Kajaani city centre, in the village of Paltaniemi. It is the main commercial airport for the Kainuu region of central Finland, handling domestic flights to Helsinki and occasional seasonal charters. The terminal is compact – one building, one floor, one security checkpoint. For a region that sees long, dark winters and stretches of remote forest, the airport serves as an essential link to the rest of the country.
Reaching Kajaani Airport is straightforward. From Kajaani city centre, take Route 22 east for about seven kilometres, then turn north onto Airport Road (Lentoasemantie). The drive takes ten to fifteen minutes. Taxis are available from the city centre; a typical fare runs around 25–35 euros. There is no direct public bus service to the terminal. However, the local bus operator KAINUUN LIIKENNE runs route 3 from the Kajaani bus station to the Paltaniemi area, stopping about one kilometre from the airport terminal. The walk from the nearest bus stop to the terminal takes roughly twelve minutes along a roadside path. For travellers with luggage or during winter (when snow can be deep), a taxi is more practical. Bicycles are used in summer, but parking is free and available directly in front of the terminal. The car park has designated wheelchair-accessible spaces near the entrance.
Kajaani Airport’s terminal is small but functional. On arrival, passengers walk directly from the aircraft into the baggage claim area – there are no jet bridges. The departures hall holds a check-in counter, a small café (open during flight times), and seating for about forty people. Security screening is quick; one lane handles all passengers. The confirmed facilities include free Wi-Fi (network: Finavia Free), wheelchair-accessible entrance and toilets, baggage storage lockers (located near the check-in area), and a car park with accessible spaces. The toilets are clean and heated, important in winter. There is no duty-free shop. The atmosphere is quiet and unhurried – most passengers arrive twenty to thirty minutes before departure. The busiest times are weekday evenings around 7 pm, when the last flight to Helsinki typically departs. During those hours, the terminal can feel full, but lines remain short. For departures, prepare for a walk across the tarmac in any weather – dress accordingly. Arriving passengers will find the baggage carousel operational within ten minutes of landing.
The airport sits in Paltaniemi, a village that holds more history than its modest size suggests. Paltaniemi was once a thriving trading post on the shores of Lake Oulujärvi, Finland’s fifth-largest lake. In the 18th century, it was home to one of the country’s earliest glassworks, producing bottles and window panes. Today, the village is best known for two attractions. The first is the Paltaniemi Church (Paltaniemen kirkko), a wooden cruciform church built in 1726, whose interior is covered with naïve frescoes painted by local artist Emanuel Granberg in the 1790s. The church lies just two kilometres from the airport. The second is the Paltamo Rectory (Paltamon pappila), a historic parsonage that now houses a museum and café. The area around the airport is predominantly forest and farmland, with Lake Oulujärvi's shoreline a short walk away. The lake offers fishing, boating, and summer cottages. For travellers with a layover or a delayed flight, the church and the lake are worth a short visit. However, most passengers use the airport as a gateway to the broader Kainuu region – a area of vast taiga forests, national parks, and ski resorts. Popular destinations include the winter sports centre Vuokatti (35 kilometres east), with its indoor ski tunnel and spa hotels; the Hossa National Park (100 kilometres north), known for ancient rock paintings and hiking trails; and the city of Kajaani itself, with its 17th-century castle ruins and the Kajaani Art Museum. The region is also a hub for cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and berry picking. The airport’s small size and limited flight schedule (mostly two to four daily flights to Helsinki) mean that travellers often combine their trip with a rental car. Several car rental desks operate inside the terminal, including Avis, Europcar, and Budget. It is wise to book a car in advance, especially during peak winter and summer seasons. Paltaniemi itself is quiet – a village of around 1,000 people – but its proximity to the lake and the church gives it a tranquil charm that contrasts with the more bustling centres of Kajaani.
The airport is open only during flight times. The terminal building opens approximately one hour before the first arrival and closes after the last departure. There is no 24-hour access. The official website (finavia.fi) lists the current flight schedule and any maintenance closures. For enquiries, call +358 20 7087510. The café accepts cash and cards; however, the nearest ATM is in Kajaani city centre. If you arrive early and the terminal is not yet open, there is a heated shelter (a small bus-stop-style kiosk) at the car park entrance. For passengers with reduced mobility, the airport staff can provide assistance – contact the airport in advance. Baggage storage lockers cost five euros per day. One concrete piece of advice: if your flight departs in the evening, arrive by 6:30 pm at the latest – the busy period around 7 pm can still mean short queues, but parking may fill quickly, and the café tends to run out of fresh pastries by then.
