Overview

Ercan International Airport (ECN) is the primary gateway for travellers to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). Located on the eastern outskirts of Nicosia—the divided capital of the island—it handles most scheduled and charter flights from Turkey, as well as a growing number of services from other European countries via Turkish airlines. The airport serves both Turkish Cypriot residents and tourists visiting Northern Cyprus’s historic cities, Mediterranean beaches, and mountain villages. Because Northern Cyprus is only recognised as a sovereign state by Turkey, all international flights land at Ercan after transiting through Turkish airports, though direct flights also operate from a few other countries. For those heading to Kyrenia (Girne)—the coastal tourist hub about 30 km north—the drive takes roughly 30 minutes. Famagusta (Gazimağusa) and the eastern beaches are about a 40-minute drive on the main coastal highway.

By Car: The airport is connected to Nicosia via the D-25 highway (Lefkoşa–Gazimağusa yolu). Clear road signs direct drivers to the terminal. A multi-storey car park and several paid parking lots are available on-site, along with some paid street parking. Rental car desks are located inside the arrivals hall, with major international and local companies represented.

By Taxi: Taxis are the most convenient option for passengers arriving at any hour. Official airport taxis operate on fixed fares to most destinations; the journey to central Nicosia typically costs around 30–40 Turkish Lira (or equivalent in euros/pounds), though prices should be confirmed at the taxi stand. Ridesharing apps are also available locally.

By Bus: Limited public bus services connect the airport to Nicosia city centre and other towns. Routes and schedules are subject to change, so travellers should check locally for the latest timetables. Buses stop outside the arrivals terminal.
