Given the region's harsh winters, roads can be icy from October to April, so allow extra travel time.

Snow cover lasts from October to May.

The area is home to several ethnic minorities, including the Oroqen and Evenki, who traditionally practiced hunting and reindeer herding. Today, the economy relies on forestry, limited agriculture, and tourism. Visitors come primarily for winter activities: skiing at the Jiagedaqi Ski Resort, ice fishing on frozen lakes, and the chance to experience the "Cold Pole of China" in nearby Mohe County, which records the country's lowest temperatures. In summer, the region offers hiking, birdwatching, and the spectacular autumn colors of the larch forests.

Key attractions include the Daxinganling Botanical Garden, the Gurendi Mountain Scenic Area, and the Hanjiayuanzi Forest Park. The airport is also the jumping-off point for those heading to the Arctic Village (Beiji Cun) in Mohe, China's northernmost settlement, about three hours' drive north. The border with Russia lies just 50 kilometers west, adding a geopolitical layer to the region's remote feel.
