Overview

Phnom Penh International Airport (IATA: PNH) is the primary international gateway to Cambodia’s capital and largest city. Serving both scheduled passenger flights and cargo operations, it connects Phnom Penh with major hubs across Asia, including Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Seoul, and Shanghai, as well as domestic destinations such as Siem Reap and Sihanoukville. The airport is also a base for Cambodia Angkor Air, the national carrier. While Siem Reap International Airport sees more tourists due to Angkor Wat, Phnom Penh handles a higher proportion of business travellers, diplomats, and those visiting the country’s administrative and economic centre. The facility consists of a single passenger terminal with both domestic and international zones, and it has undergone several expansions to accommodate growing traffic.

Location & Access

The airport is situated about 10 kilometres west of central Phnom Penh, in the Russey Keo district. The main route into the city is National Highway 4 (Russian Boulevard), which connects directly to the terminal. Depending on traffic, the drive downtown takes 20 to 40 minutes. For those heading to other parts of Cambodia, the airport is also the starting point for road journeys to the southern coast (Sihanoukville, Kampot) and the Mekong Delta provinces.

By Taxi or Ride-Hail: The most convenient option is to take a taxi or a ride-hail service like Grab or PassApp. Official taxi counters are available inside the arrivals hall, and prices are generally fixed per destination zone. It is advisable to confirm the fare before departing. Ride-hail apps work well at the airport, with designated pick-up points near the terminal exit.

By Private Car: Hotels and tour operators often offer pre-arranged airport transfers. The airport has a dedicated drop-off lane at departures and a pick-up zone at arrivals.

By Public Bus: City buses serve the airport via routes that link to the central bus station and key districts. However, services can be infrequent and routes may not be immediately intuitive for first-time visitors. A limited shuttle bus also connects the airport to the city centre, but schedules are subject to change.

By Tuk-Tuk: Tuk-tuks are widely available and are a cheaper alternative to taxis, though they are slower and less weather-protected. Negotiate the fare before setting off.

Parking: The airport offers a paid parking lot directly opposite the terminal building. Short-term and long-term options are available. Rates are reasonable by regional standards.

The airport provides a range of amenities designed to assist passengers with different needs.

Accessibility: The terminal is wheelchair-accessible, including the car park, entrance, and restrooms. Wheelchair assistance can be requested through your airline or at the airport’s information desk.

Baggage Storage: A left-luggage service is available for passengers who wish to explore the city without their bags. The facility operates during terminal opening hours.

Toilets and Baby Care: Clean toilet facilities are located throughout the terminal. A dedicated changing table is provided in at least one of the accessible restrooms, making it easier for families with infants.

Other Services: The airport has currency exchange counters, ATMs, a small selection of shops selling souvenirs and travel essentials, and a few food and beverage outlets, including a café and a restaurant serving local and international dishes. Free Wi-Fi is available within the terminal – look for the network provided by the airport authority. Charging stations for electronic devices are scattered near seating areas.

Note that the airport is not open 24 hours. The terminal closes during overnight hours when no flights are scheduled. Passengers with very early departures or late arrivals should plan accordingly and check with their airline for specific terminal opening times.

Phnom Penh is situated at the confluence of the Mekong, Tonlé Sap, and Bassac rivers in southern Cambodia. The city is the political, economic, and cultural heart of the country. Travellers passing through the airport are often on their way to explore Cambodia’s rich history: the Royal Palace, Silver Pagoda, and the National Museum are major landmarks within the city. The infamous Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek are sobering but important sites that draw visitors interested in the country’s 20th-century history.

Beyond the capital, the airport serves as a hub for connecting to the coastal resorts of Sihanoukville and the islands of Koh Rong and Koh Rong Samloem, as well as the laid-back riverside town of Kampot and the Unesco-listed Preah Vihear temple complex (accessible via domestic flights or road). The region’s cuisine, featuring fresh herbs, rice, and fish, is a highlight for food travellers.

Currency: Cambodian Riel and US dollars are both widely accepted. ATMs inside the terminal dispense both currencies.

Connectivity: Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the terminal. SIM cards and portable Wi-Fi devices can be purchased at shops in the arrivals area.

The airport is a straightforward facility that prioritises efficiency. For a smooth journey, arrive at least two hours before a domestic flight and three hours before an international departure, especially during peak travel periods.
