Air Calédonie International, operating under the brand name Aircalin, serves as the international flag carrier of New Caledonia, a French overseas collectivity in the South Pacific. Established in 1983, the airline was originally created to connect the archipelago with other Pacific nations and France. Its ownership structure reflects its strategic importance: the government of New Caledonia holds a majority stake, while the remaining shares are distributed among local financial institutions and the French state, including a historical minority interest from Air France. This public-private partnership underscores Aircalin’s role as a vital link for both tourism and the local diaspora, ensuring the territory’s economic and cultural ties with the wider world are maintained.

The airline’s fleet is tailored for medium- to long-haul operations, emphasizing modern fuel efficiency and passenger comfort. As of recent years, Aircalin’s core long-haul aircraft are the Airbus A330-900neo, which replaced earlier A330-200s, and the A320neo for regional and medium-range services. The A330neo features lie-flat business class seats and a premium economy cabin, reflecting the carrier’s focus on maximizing comfort on its lengthy routes. The A320neo, meanwhile, offers a single-class configuration or a two-class layout depending on demand, providing flexibility for shorter sectors. The primary hub for Air Calédonie International is La Tontouta International Airport, located approximately 50 kilometres northwest of Nouméa, the capital of New Caledonia. This airport serves as the gateway for all international flights, handling both passenger and cargo operations. While the airline also maintains a secondary presence at Nouméa Magenta Airport for domestic services operated by its sister company Air Calédonie, La Tontouta remains the sole base for Aircalin’s international network. The airport’s single runway and terminal facilities are tailored to handle widebody aircraft, reflecting the carrier’s long-haul ambitions. The airline does not operate a network of secondary focus cities, instead concentrating all international departures and arrivals at its main hub, which facilitates efficient connections between long-distance flights and the domestic network.

Aircalin operates as a full-service, flag carrier airline, offering a comprehensive product that includes multiple cabin classes, in-flight entertainment, and meal services. It is not a low-cost or charter carrier, nor is it a member of any global airline alliance such as Star Alliance, oneworld, or SkyTeam. Instead, the airline maintains bilateral interline and codeshare agreements with several international partners, allowing passengers to book seamless itineraries beyond its own network. Among its notable milestones, Aircalin became the first airline in the Pacific to order and operate the Airbus A330neo, taking delivery of its first example in 2019. This order was accompanied by a significant cabin upgrade programme, earning the carrier recognition for its premium service standards in a region dominated by leisure tourism. Additionally, the airline has consistently achieved high on-time performance ratings and was awarded the "Best Airline in the Pacific" by Skytrax in multiple years, further cementing its reputation as a reliable and customer-focused carrier connecting New Caledonia to the rest of the world.
