Overview

Solwezi Airport (IATA: SLI) is a domestic airport serving the town of Solwezi, the capital of Zambia’s Northwestern Province. The airport primarily handles scheduled and charter flights from Lusaka and other Zambian hubs, catering largely to the mining industry that drives the region’s economy. Workers, executives, and contractors from major mines such as Kansanshi (one of the largest copper mines in Africa) and Sentinel make up the majority of passengers. The airport also sees occasional government and NGO traffic, as well as travellers visiting the town for business or to connect to more remote areas.

While small, Solwezi Airport is a vital transport link for a region that is rapidly growing due to mineral extraction. It is not open all days of the week (hours are limited) and peaks in the late afternoon, around 4 to 5 pm, when flights from Lusaka arrive and depart.

Solwezi Airport is located approximately 15 kilometres southwest of the town centre, off the Solwezi–Mwinilunga Road (D301). The drive takes about 20–30 minutes by car. Access is straightforward: taxis are the most common mode of transport from town and are readily available near the airport terminal. Fares are negotiable, and it is advisable to agree on a price before starting the journey. Some hotels in Solwezi offer shuttle services for guests – check with your accommodation in advance. Self-driving is also possible; the airport has a car park with designated disabled bays.

The road to the airport is tarred but can be narrow in places. There is no public bus service directly serving the airport. For travellers arriving from other parts of Zambia, the nearest large city is Ndola in the Copperbelt Province, about 250 kilometres to the east (roughly 3–4 hours by road). Lusaka is approximately 600 kilometres south-east, a 7–8 hour drive.

The terminal has wheelchair-accessible features throughout: the car park includes designated spaces, the entrance is step-free, and there is a wheelchair-accessible toilet. Solwezi is the commercial and administrative hub of Northwestern Province, a region famous for its vast copper and gemstone deposits. The Kansanshi Mine, just north of the town, is one of the world’s largest copper mines, operated by First Quantum Minerals. The mine’s presence has transformed Solwezi from a quiet settlement into a boomtown with a diverse population of Zambian and expatriate workers.

Beyond mining, the area is characterised by miombo woodlands and a tropical climate with distinct wet and dry seasons. Wildlife includes antelope, monkeys, and birdlife, but the region is not a major safari destination. Travellers often pass through Solwezi on their way to the remote Lumwana Mine, or to cross into the Democratic Republic of Congo via the Kasumbalesa border post (about 100 km north). The town itself offers basic amenities: shops, guesthouses, and a few restaurants.

Based on flight schedules, it is typically operational on days when flights are scheduled – often Monday to Friday, and less frequently on weekends. Arrive at least one hour before departure for domestic flights. The busiest period is between 4 pm and 5 pm when most flights arrive and depart.
