I've land at 21:00, flight from Kyiv. It was impossible to order taxi to airport via app or phone, also no cabs near enterence. Finally I've added +70% to the price in taxi app and driver accepted trip, but waiting time has been 20 minutes. And the best thing - guards of the airport said me to go outside and wait on the street, because the !railway station! is closed (what?!). It was no any working hours, and it should be 24/7 - is it airport or what? And they were not polite at all. So I've been waiting on taxi in Novembers' dark evening, near the dark building, listing to the barking dogs outside.
Easy and quick check-in on our Turkish Airlines flight. Note that they one snack bar is outside security. There is no place to get food or drink (other than drinking water) after passing through immigration and security.
Airport is cool. Calm and smooth. But Dear Turkish airline please come back to Kherson .
Mykolaiv International Airport (also known as Balovne Airport) is a modest international airport serving the city of Mykolaiv and the wider southern region of Ukraine. Built during the Soviet era and later modernised, the airport primarily handles scheduled and charter flights to domestic destinations such as Kyiv, as well as seasonal international routes to leisure hubs in Turkey, Egypt, and the Middle East. It acts as a regional gateway for passengers travelling for business, tourism, or to visit family, and also supports limited cargo operations. The airport is classified as international, but its traffic volume is relatively low compared to major Ukrainian hubs, making it a calm and straightforward option for departures and arrivals.
The airport is located approximately 4 kilometres west of central Mykolaiv, near the village of Balovne. It sits just off the M14 highway which connects Mykolaiv to Odesa (about 120 kilometres southwest) and Kherson (roughly 70 kilometres southeast). The setting is flat and surrounded by agricultural fields typical of the region.
Getting to and from the airport:
For passengers arriving from nearby cities, driving is the most convenient option. The airport does not serve long-distance buses or rail directly, but Odesa International Airport, roughly two hours south, offers many more international connections.
Mykolaiv International Airport is a small, single-terminal facility with basic services. Confirmed amenities include:
There are no restaurants, cafes, or duty-free shops within the terminal building as of confirmed information. Passengers are advised to eat or purchase supplies before arriving. There is no VIP lounge, currency exchange, or ATMs on site – bring cash in Ukrainian hryvnias and exchange money in the city centre. Wi-Fi may not be consistently available; travellers should rely on mobile data.
Given the limited facilities, connecting passengers may find the airport basic but functional. Allow extra time for any unforeseen delays.
The city of Mykolaiv is the administrative centre of Mykolaiv Oblast, a region known worldwide for its shipbuilding industry. The city’s namesake, Saint Nicholas, is reflected in the many shipyards along the Southern Bug River, which flows through the city into the Black Sea. Mykolaiv is one of the key cargo ports of Ukraine, handling grain, metals, and machinery.
Beyond industry, the region offers underrated tourism potential. The Kinburn Peninsula, a narrow spit of pristine beaches and sand dunes, lies to the southwest near the Dnieper-Bug estuary. The historic city itself features the Mykolaiv Astronomical Observatory, the Mykolaiv Regional Museum, and a lively riverside promenade. The area is flat and agricultural, with large sunflower fields and orchards in summer.
Passengers travelling through Mykolaiv International Airport are often visiting on business related to maritime trade, agriculture, or government, or are tourists heading to the Black Sea coast – though most international leisure traffic uses Odesa’s airport instead. The absence of heavy commercial air traffic means a more relaxed atmosphere.
While the airport is small and lacking some modern amenities, it provides the essential functions of a regional airport in southern Ukraine. Plan accordingly, and you’ll pass through efficiently.
