Kisoro Airport

Kisoro Airport occupies a compact strip of tarmac in the far southwestern corner of Uganda, less than two kilometres from the town of Kisoro and within sight of the Virunga Mountains. It is a domestic airport with no scheduled international flights, used primarily by travellers heading to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park for gorilla trekking. The airport handles a modest number of flights each day, mostly operated by small propeller aircraft carrying 12 to 20 passengers. There is no control tower; pilots communicate by radio. The terminal is a single storey building, painted white, with a corrugated metal roof and a small parking apron visible from the gate. Despite its size, the airport provides a vital shortcut: the drive from Entebbe to Kisoro takes eight to ten hours, while a flight covers the distance in under 90 minutes. That time saving explains almost everything about who uses Kisoro Airport and why.

Getting There

Kisoro Airport sits on the edge of Kisoro town, about 500 metres from the main market. The nearest city of any size is Kabale, 75 kilometres to the east – a journey of roughly two hours by road along a winding, potholed route that climbs through terraced hillsides. From Kampala or Entebbe, most passengers take a scheduled flight to Kisoro, so ground transport is typically limited to getting from the airport to nearby lodges. Taxis and private cars wait outside the small terminal building when flights arrive; there is no official taxi rank or booking desk, but drivers are easy to find. A ride to the Bwindi park boundary (any of the four sectors) costs between 50,000 and 100,000 Ugandan shillings (approximately 15 to 30 US dollars), depending on distance and road condition. Negotiation is expected. For those arriving by road, the airport is well signposted from the Kisoro–Kabale highway; the turn-off is just past the town petrol station. Parking at the airport is free and unmonitored – a grass area adjacent to the terminal.

Inside the Terminal

The terminal at Kisoro Airport is functional rather than welcoming. On arrival, passengers walk from the aircraft across the apron to a single door that opens into a small waiting hall. The room has a concrete floor, plastic chairs along the walls, and a counter for check-in on the left. There is no air conditioning; ceiling fans provide limited relief on hot afternoons. The confirmed facilities include a wheelchair-accessible entrance – a ramp from the car park to the door – and a wheelchair-accessible toilet inside. Baggage storage is available, though it consists of a locked cupboard behind the check-in counter; passengers should ask staff to secure bags if needed. The main toilet is a squat-style unit with a flush, reasonably clean by regional standards. The entire building is small enough that everything is visible from the entrance. Departure procedures are straightforward: arrive 30 minutes before the scheduled flight, present your booking confirmation, and wait until the aircraft is ready. Security consists of a handheld metal detector and a bag check by the pilot or a ground handler. There is no shop, no café, no ATM. A water dispenser near the counter is sometimes present but not guaranteed. The atmosphere is relaxed – delays are common due to weather, and announcements are made by shout or by the airport manager walking out of the office.

Kisoro Airport and the Region

Kisoro Airport serves a region that draws visitors from around the world for one main reason: mountain gorillas. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, lies less than an hour's drive from the airport and is home to roughly half of the world's remaining mountain gorillas. The park's four gorilla trekking sectors – Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo – are all accessible from Kisoro. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, bordering Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, is even closer – about 15 kilometres from the airport. Mgahinga offers gorilla trekking as well as golden monkey tracking and climbs up Mount Gahinga, a dormant volcano. The entire region is part of the Albertine Rift, a biodiversity hotspot with steep forested valleys, bamboo zones, and volcanic peaks exceeding 4,000 metres. The local culture is predominantly Bakiga and Bafumbira, with Kinyarwanda widely spoken alongside Rukiga and English. Kisoro town itself is a busy trading centre with a lively Saturday market, where produce from the fertile volcanic soil – potatoes, beans, sorghum, and passion fruit – is sold in mounds on the ground. The region's history includes periods of conflict during the Rwandan genocide and the Congo wars, but today it is peaceful and reliant on tourism and agriculture. Travellers who venture beyond the national parks can visit Lake Mutanda, a crater lake surrounded by terraced hills, or take a boat to the islands where local communities host overnight stays. The airport, modest as it is, makes these experiences possible for visitors who have only a few days. Without it, the journey from Entebbe would eat an entire day each way.

Practical Information

Kisoro Airport is not open 24 hours. The busiest times, based on flight schedules, are Monday at 8 am, Tuesday at 11 pm, Wednesday at 10 pm, and Thursday at 9 pm – though these may vary with seasonal charters. The airport has no official website or publicly listed phone number; for enquiries, contact the airline operating your flight (typically Aerolink Uganda, Bar Aviation, or KAS Airlines). The runway is short – approximately 1,200 metres – and flights are sometimes cancelled due to fog or afternoon storms, particularly during the rainy seasons (March to May and September to November). A concrete piece of advice: book a flight that arrives in the morning. Afternoon flights are more likely to be disrupted, and if you miss the gorilla trekking briefing at the park headquarters, you may have to wait until the next day. Carry cash in Ugandan shillings for ground transport, as there is no ATM at the airport. The nearest reliable ATM is in Kisoro town at the Stanbic Bank branch, a five-minute drive away. Pack light – luggage space on small aircraft is limited to 15 kilograms per person, and a soft duffel bag is easier to stow than a hard-shell suitcase.
