Bugesera International Airport is a modern international airport located in the Bugesera District of Rwanda, near the town of Rilima. Designed to serve as the country’s new primary aviation gateway, it is being developed to relieve capacity pressures on Kigali International Airport and to support Rwanda’s growing economy and tourism sector. Once fully operational, the airport will handle a mix of passenger and cargo flights, connecting Rwanda to destinations across Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and beyond. It is intended for both leisure and business travellers, as well as for regional transit passengers. The airport represents a significant infrastructure investment for Rwanda, reflecting the nation’s ambitions to become a regional transport and logistics hub.
Bugesera International Airport is situated in the southeastern part of Rwanda, approximately 25 kilometres southeast of Kigali, the capital city. The airport lies within the Bugesera District, a region characterised by rolling hills, numerous lakes, and agricultural land. The site is accessible via a newly constructed road that connects to the main Kigali–Akagera–Tanzania highway, making the journey from central Kigali typically around 40 minutes to one hour by car, depending on traffic.
For those driving, the airport offers a wheelchair-accessible car park, ensuring ease of arrival for passengers with reduced mobility. Taxis and ride-hailing services are available from Kigali, and private transfers can be arranged through hotels or tour operators. Public transport options are limited but may include minibus services from the city once the airport is fully operational. The airport’s proximity to Kigali means that most travellers will base themselves in the capital and commute for flights. For passengers from other parts of Rwanda, bus services connect to Kigali, from where onward travel to the airport is possible.
Bugesera International Airport is designed with passenger comfort and accessibility in mind. The following amenities have been confirmed:
As a new airport, additional facilities are expected to be added over time, including retail outlets, restaurants, lounges, and duty-free shopping. Travelers should note that the range of services may expand as the airport progresses toward full completion. For now, the core provisions ensure basic comfort and accessibility.
Bugesera District lies in the Eastern Province of Rwanda, a region known for its scenic lakes, including Lake Mugesera, Lake Cyohoha, and Lake Rweru. The area is predominantly agricultural, with farming communities cultivating crops such as maize, beans, and cassava. The district also hosts the Akagera National Park, a major wildlife reserve famous for its populations of elephants, lions, giraffes, and hippos, as well as boat safaris on Lake Ihema. Tourists often combine a visit to Akagera with gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park or cultural tours in Kigali.
Rwanda itself is a small, landlocked country in East Africa, known for its lush green hills, often called the “Land of a Thousand Hills.” The capital Kigali is a clean, modern city with a growing reputation as a conference and business hub. Bugesera International Airport will serve as a key entry point for tourists exploring Rwanda’s natural attractions, as well as for business travellers attending events in Kigali or elsewhere in the region.
As Bugesera International Airport continues to develop, its role as Rwanda’s main international gateway will grow. Travelers can expect a modern, efficient facility that reflects the country’s commitment to quality infrastructure.
