King Shaka International Airport is one of the most well-run airports I've visited. The layout is spacious, clean, and easy to navigate, with clear signage that makes getting around stress-free. Security and check-in are generally efficient, and staff are friendly, professional, and always willing to assist. There's a good variety of shops, restaurants, and lounges, making the waiting time much more comfortable. Parking is well-organized and conveniently located close to the terminal. The overall atmosphere feels safe, welcoming, and well-maintained.
Nothing special as far as airports go. A few different options to eat, a few shops & that's about it. Over all its an average airport experience. Neither good or bad. A long layover could get a little boring.
A large modern airport with great signage. Bag collection was swift. Wifi connection was relatively stable. If you need a sim card there is MTN, lunch there are many restraints like spurs or Mugg & Bean. Sadly, there are no bureau exchange companies. Some ATM machines won't accept all visa/ mastercards. Pre-check if the car rental companies accept Mastercards from your country. Fortunately, there are certified uber drivers ready to assist. PS the airport is a bit far out from the city centre.
The KFC team members were so friendly, my food took no time to come out it was less than 4 minutes. Keep up the good work. Happy family
King Shaka International Airport (IATA: DUR, ICAO: FALE) is the primary international airport serving Durban and the wider KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa. Located in La Mercy, about 35 kilometers north of Durban's city center, the airport opened in 2010, replacing the older Durban International Airport. Named after the legendary Zulu king Shaka, the airport is a key gateway for tourists visiting the region's beaches, game reserves, and the iconic Drakensberg mountains. It handles both domestic and international flights, linking Durban to major hubs in Africa, the Middle East, and Europe. The single-terminal building is designed for efficiency and passenger comfort, with a modern, airy layout that facilitates smooth flow through check-in, security, and boarding.
King Shaka International Airport offers a range of on-site services and facilities to accommodate passenger needs. Accessibility is well catered for, with a wheelchair-accessible car park, entrance, and toilets throughout the terminal. The airport also provides baggage storage for travellers who wish to explore the area without their luggage. Family-friendly amenities include changing tables in the restrooms. For those driving to the airport, there are paid parking options, including a multi-storey car park and additional paid parking lots. The terminal itself is equipped with standard amenities such as toilets, and various retail outlets and dining options are available for passengers. While the confirmed amenities list does not include lounges or free Wi-Fi, travellers can expect the typical services found at a modern international airport.
King Shaka International Airport is not open 24 hours a day. The terminal operates according to flight schedules, with peak hours typically occurring around 5 PM and 6 PM. During these times, passengers should allow extra time for check-in and security queues. It is advisable to check with your airline for specific flight timings and plan your arrival accordingly. The airport may restrict access to the terminal outside of operating hours, so early-morning or late-night travellers should coordinate with their airline or the airport's information desk.
For general inquiries, the airport can be reached by phone at +27 32 436 6585. The official website (www.airports.co.za/airports/king-shaka-international-airport) provides up-to-date information on flights, services, and parking. Passengers can also find details on ground transportation, car rental, and hotel accommodations through the site. For specific airline assistance, contact your carrier directly.
King Shaka International Airport is well connected to Durban and surrounding areas by road. The N2 highway provides direct access, and the airport is approximately a 30-minute drive from the city center under normal traffic conditions. Taxis, ride-hailing services, and car rental agencies are available at the terminal. Public transport options include shuttle services and bus routes that link the airport to key destinations in Durban and the North Coast. Parking is available for short-term and long-term stays, with the multi-storey car park offering convenient access to the terminal.
Given the peak hours around 5 PM and 6 PM, travellers should aim to arrive at least two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international departures. Security screening is standard, so have documentation ready. The terminal is compact and easy to navigate, with clear signage in English and other languages. If you have a layover, consider using the baggage storage to explore the nearby attractions, such as the Umhlanga Rocks or the Moses Mabhida Stadium. For any issues, the information desk in the arrivals hall can assist with directions and general inquiries.
