Busiest on Mondays around 8 am — usually a little busy.
Small island airport typical for the Caribbean. The building is better organized than most and there is actually indoor seating vs some of the airports that we have flown into and out of on other small islands. Incredibly thorough search of luggage so vanquish any thoughts of smuggling anything.
One of the best flights I have ever experienced was from Argylle International Airport to Union Island Airport in November 2021. Flying on a DHC-6 was quite an exciting experience that I hope to repeat. It was such a thrilling flight. I loved landing at Union, especially having seen other planes land when I stayed on Union Island on previous occasions. Many thanks to the pilot and co-pilot for such a great flight. It would have been wonderful to spend more time at the airport, just watching the planes, but we obviously could not spend all day on the tarmac.
Very small clean friendly airport! Super fun landing
Simple airport, but it's all fine
Union Island Airport (also known as Clifton Airport) is the primary air gateway to Union Island, one of the most popular destinations in the Grenadines chain of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. This small but functional airport handles domestic and regional flights, connecting travelers to St. Vincent, Barbados, Grenada, and other Caribbean islands. The airport is used almost exclusively by light aircraft and turboprops, as its runway cannot accommodate larger jets. Visitors arriving here are typically leisure travelers seeking the island's renowned beaches, sailing waters, and laid-back atmosphere. Given its size, the airport processes passengers quickly, making it a convenient entry point for those heading to Union Island or onward to smaller cays by boat.
Union Island Airport sits near the town of Clifton on the northwestern coast of Union Island. The island itself is part of the Grenadines parish of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, located roughly 60 kilometers (37 miles) south of St. Vincent's capital, Kingstown, and just a few kilometers north of the Tobago Cays. The airport is easily reached from anywhere on the island, as Union Island measures only about 9 square kilometers (3.5 square miles). Taxis and rental cars are available at the terminal, and many resorts offer pre-arranged transfers. For those traveling to nearby islands like Mayreau or the Tobago Cays, water taxis can be arranged at Clifton's main dock, a short drive from the airport. The closest major international airport is in Barbados (BGI), about a 45-minute flight away, or in St. Vincent (SVD), a 20-minute flight.
Union Island Airport is modest but provides essential amenities for a comfortable transit. The terminal is wheelchair-accessible, with designated parking, an accessible entrance, and an accessible toilet – all confirmed features. General restrooms are also available. There is a small waiting area with seating, and passengers can expect basic services such as a check-in desk and baggage claim. Note that there are no restaurants, shops, or lounges within the airport, so travelers should bring snacks and entertainment if needed. The airport's compact size means walking distances are short, and the staff is known for being helpful. For passengers with special needs, it is advisable to coordinate assistance with your airline in advance.
Union Island is a gem of the Grenadines, celebrated for its dramatic volcanic hills, pristine white-sand beaches, and crystal-clear turquoise waters. The island's main industries are tourism and fishing. It is a hub for yacht charter and sailing, with many visitors arriving by air to then embark on catamaran trips. The neighboring Tobago Cays Marine Park, a protected area with uninhabited cays and turtle-filled lagoons, is a major attraction. On Union Island itself, the village of Clifton offers a handful of shops, restaurants, and bars, while the more remote Ashton Beach provides tranquility. Hiking to the top of Mount Taboi yields panoramic views of the archipelago. The region is also known for its reggae and soca music scene during local festivals. Travelers come here to escape crowds and experience the Caribbean's unspoiled beauty.
The airport is not open daily; it operates on a schedule aligned with flight arrivals and departures. Peak activity typically occurs around 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM. Given its limited hours, it is essential to confirm your flight time and check-in window with your airline. The contact number for the airport is +1 784-458-8750. There is no official website listed, but information can be obtained through the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Airports Authority or your airline. Arrive at least 30–45 minutes before departure for domestic flights, as security is streamlined but swift. Currency is the Eastern Caribbean Dollar (XCD), but US dollars are widely accepted. Remember that facilities are basic; plan accordingly to ensure a smooth journey.
