Busiest on Mondays around 2 pm — usually busy.
Good afternoon, yesterday we saw our daughter and grandson off. My husband was detained for smoking in an unauthorized place. Pay attention to the sign, it has faded, it is completely invisible. Another man was detained for the same reason. My husband was held for an hour and a half for a fine of 500 rubles, and the man was released. How do you treat people? Or do our laws work differently for everyone???? Complete lawlessness.
A small regional airport. There's a tiny cafe on the second floor and an ATM downstairs. View of the airfield.
We work and hold on solely for the sake of the republic's residents and the capital's visitors, as the only air service! If only people knew what this means to us! Thank you to those who support and understand us!
Small airport, but everything is convenient. Tiny cafe, souvenirs, everything is there:)
Elista International Airport (also known as Elista Airport) is the primary air gateway to the Republic of Kalmykia, a federal subject of Russia located in the southwestern part of the country. The airport serves the capital city of Elista and the surrounding region, handling both domestic flights from major Russian cities and occasional international charter services. It is a modest facility compared to Russia's major hubs, but it plays a vital role in connecting this unique and culturally distinct region to the rest of the country and beyond. The airport is used by a mix of business travellers, government officials, and tourists drawn to Kalmykia's natural and cultural attractions. Notably, Elista is known as the "Chess Capital of Russia" and is a center of Buddhism in Europe, which brings visitors with specific interests.
Elista International Airport is situated approximately 10 kilometres northeast of the city centre of Elista. The airport's location on the steppe means it is easily accessible by road, with the main approach via the A154 highway. Most passengers reach the airport by private car, taxi, or pre-arranged transfer. Taxis are available from the city centre; the journey typically takes 15-20 minutes depending on traffic. Public transport options are limited, so it is advisable to arrange transport in advance. There is no direct rail connection to the airport. For those driving, the airport has a parking area adjacent to the terminal. Elista itself is a relatively small city, so navigating to and from the airport is straightforward.
Elista International Airport offers essential amenities for passengers. The terminal is equipped with a wheelchair-accessible car park and a wheelchair-accessible entrance, making it relatively easy for travellers with reduced mobility to enter the building. Once inside, there are accessible toilets available. Beyond these accessibility features, the airport provides basic passenger facilities: a small waiting area, check-in counters, and a security screening zone. Given the airport's size, dining and shopping options are limited – there may be a small café or vending machines, but passengers should not expect extensive retail. It is wise to bring your own snacks and entertainment, especially if you have a layover. Wi-Fi availability is not guaranteed, so plan accordingly. The airport's simple layout means navigation is easy, but services are minimal.
Elista is the capital of the Republic of Kalmykia, a federal subject of Russia with a distinct culture and history. Kalmykia is the only region in Europe where Buddhism is the predominant religion, having adopted Tibetan Buddhism in the 17th century. This heritage is visible in Elista's Golden Temple (the largest Buddhist temple in Europe) and numerous stupas throughout the city. The region is also famous for its chess enthusiasm; Elista hosted the 1998 Chess Olympiad and is home to Chess City, a dedicated chess village. The landscape is dominated by the vast Kalmyk steppe, offering opportunities for ecotourism, birdwatching, and experiencing traditional nomadic culture. Travellers often visit for these unique cultural attractions, as well as for business related to the region's agriculture (particularly livestock) and government activities. The airport sees increased traffic during key events such as the annual Tulip Festival in spring and the Kalmyk New Year celebrations.
