New, small, nice airport. The waiting area after checkin is relatively small, hence very crowded even for people fitting into only one plane. The personnel doesn't seem to speak any other language than Romanian.
We are very happy that we can finally travel from there
Brașov-Ghimbav Airport (IATA: GHV) is the newest international airport in Romania, designed to serve the historic region of Transylvania. Opened in 2023, it provides a direct gateway for travelers heading to Brașov, one of the country’s most popular tourist destinations, as well as the surrounding Carpathian Mountains. The airport handles both domestic and limited international flights, primarily from European cities. With a single terminal, it offers a straightforward, small-scale experience that avoids the congestion of larger hubs. The airport is used mainly by leisure travelers visiting the medieval towns and ski resorts, as well as business passengers.
The airport is situated in Ghimbav, a commune approximately 10 kilometers northwest of Brașov city center. Nestled at the foot of the Carpathian Mountains, its location provides stunning views on approach and easy access to the region’s main attractions. The nearest major city is Brașov, while other towns like Râșnov and Predeal are within a short drive.
By car, the airport is reached via the DN1 national road (European route E60) which connects Bucharest to Brașov. From Brașov city center, follow signs towards Ghimbav. The journey typically takes 15–20 minutes by car or taxi. On-site parking includes a wheelchair-accessible car park, making it suitable for passengers with reduced mobility.
Public transport options are available but limited. There are regular bus services operated by local transport companies linking the airport to Brașov’s main bus terminal. Taxis and ride-sharing services are also widely available at the arrival area. For those heading directly to ski resorts like Poiana Brașov, renting a car is the most convenient option.
Brașov-Ghimbav Airport is compact but provides essential amenities for passengers. The terminal is fully wheelchair-accessible: there is a dedicated wheelchair-accessible car park near the entrance, step-free access throughout the building, and a wheelchair-accessible toilet. These features ensure that travelers with mobility needs can navigate the airport comfortably.
Baggage storage is available for passengers who wish to explore the area without their luggage. The terminal has public toilets, including a baby changing table, making it family-friendly. While the airport does not yet have restaurants or duty-free shops (as it continues to develop), vending machines offer snacks and drinks. Additional retail and food outlets may appear as traffic grows.
The airport’s layout is simple: departures and arrivals are on the same level, with check-in counters and security screening clearly signposted. Given its small size, queues are generally short, but peak hours (around 4 pm and 5 pm) can see increased activity.
Brașov is the heart of Transylvania, a region famous for its Gothic churches, Saxon fortified towns, and dramatic mountain scenery. The city’s historic center features the Black Church, the Council Square, and narrow medieval streets. Bran Castle, often associated with the Dracula legend, is a 30-minute drive from the airport. The Carpathian Mountains offer year-round outdoor activities: skiing and snowboarding in winter at Poiana Brașov, and hiking, biking, and bear-watching in summer.
The airport also serves as a starting point for exploring other Transylvanian gems such as Sighișoara (a UNESCO World Heritage site), the fortified churches of Viscri and Prejmer, and the Făgăraș Mountains. The region’s cultural richness attracts history enthusiasts, nature lovers, and adventure seekers.
Brașov-Ghimbav Airport is not open 24 hours a day; it operates according to flight schedules. Passengers should check with their airline for exact terminal opening times. The airport currently does not have a dedicated website or publicly listed phone number, but information can be found through Brașov’s tourism websites or via the airport’s official Facebook page.
For wheelchair assistance and other special services, it is advisable to arrange with your airline in advance. Parking is available both short-term and long-term, with the accessible car park clearly marked. Given the airport’s relatively recent opening, travelers are encouraged to plan ahead for transport and amenities, as services are still expanding.
