The worst airport I ve ever been at. Not even 1 shop open during my 5 hour stay
OK hopefully these notes will help someone that's planning to do an Asuncion to Ciudsd del este trip to see the Iguazu waterfalls. This airport is a minimum of 30 minutes outside of the downtown Ciudad Del Este area. It can be up to 45 minutes with traffic or weather problems. There is no uber at airport. Might get lucky with a Bolt taxi. Normal Taxi 150k. Rio off. Cash preferred but you can use a credit card. They will stop at a gas station to charge you. Don't try to visit the falls from Ciudad Del Este on a Monday. The traffic is way too difficult. We end up going on a Tuesday morning and had a bolt taxi that was super dishonest. He agreed to the trip and then said be could only go so far as the Brazil/Argentine border. I think he planned to convince us to go to the Brazil side of the park. He wanted double the amount in dollars and didn't even get us to our destination. No sir! Bus leaving the park to the Iguazu terminal is at least 30 minutes and be sure you look at all different bus transport options at that main terminal to get back to ciudad del Este. These places only take cash but a good selection of currencies accepted. We finally made it back to the remote airport and Paranair closed the desk and gate 25 minutes early due to employee staffing issues. We missed the flight home! We ended up taking an NSA bus back to Asuncion.
Sadly, my flight was canceled due to mechanical problems, but on the bright side, I got to meet some extremely nice Paraguayans. This airport should be extremely proud of the team they have representing both the airport and the country of Paraguay itself! Simply, good people!
Small local airport. The lights went down while waiting for the flight, never happened to me in such an important infrastructural place.
Guarani International Airport (IATA: AGT) serves the Alto Paraná region of eastern Paraguay, located in Minga Guazu about 25 kilometres from Ciudad del Este. This modern airport opened as a key gateway to the Triple Frontier area, offering an alternative to the congested Foz do Iguaçu Airport in Brazil and Puerto Iguazú in Argentina. It primarily handles international flights from South American destinations and is increasingly used by passengers heading to the Iguazu Falls, Itaipu Dam, and the shopping hubs of Ciudad del Este. The airport is operated by the Dirección Nacional de Aeronáutica Civil (DINAC) and features a single passenger terminal designed for efficient processing.
Guarani International Airport provides essential facilities focused on accessibility and convenience. The terminal is equipped with:
These amenities cover the basic needs of travellers with reduced mobility and families. The airport does not advertise extensive commercial offerings such as large retail zones or restaurants, but vending machines and small kiosks are typically available. For more dining and shopping options, passengers may need to plan ahead or use facilities in Ciudad del Este.
The airport is not open 24 hours a day. Terminal opening times align with flight schedules. Based on operational patterns, the busiest periods are around 3 PM and 4 PM, suggesting that flights are concentrated in the afternoon. Travellers should verify their flight’s departure time and arrive at least two hours early for check-in, especially during peak hours. Outside operating hours, the terminal may be closed, so overnight stays are not recommended.
For real-time flight status or specific inquiries, it is best to call or check the website closer to your travel date. The airport’s location is approximately 25 km from Ciudad del Este, with taxis and buses available for ground transport. There is no train or metro connection; most passengers rely on road transport including private shuttles and ride-hailing services.
Minga Guazu is a growing city in the department of Alto Paraná, part of Paraguay’s agricultural and commercial heartland. The airport serves not only leisure travellers bound for the Iguazu Falls (Brazilian side 40 km away) but also business travellers linked to the Itaipu Binational hydroelectric plant and cross-border trade. Its role as an international hub is modest compared to Asunción’s Silvio Pettirossi Airport, but it offers a less crowded and often faster alternative for accessing the Triple Frontier region. Paraguary’s visa-free entry for many nationalities and lower airport taxes further enhance its appeal.
Guarani International Airport is a functional, modern facility focused on efficiency. While amenities are basic, the airport covers the necessities for a smooth departure or arrival in Paraguay’s eastern region.
