Chinua Achebe Airport, Umuleri - A Promising Gateway to Anambra Chinua Achebe Airport, located in Umuleri, stands as Anambra State's sole aviation hub--an essential infrastructure for Nigeria's second-largest business state. Though still in its infancy, the airport is quickly becoming a vital link for travelers across the country. Facilities & Infrastructure - The airport is newly constructed, and most of its facilities are modern and fully operational. - Clean terminals, functional check-in counters, and decent waiting lounges contribute to a smooth travel experience. - However, support services like commercial taxis or shuttle buses are currently absent, making private transport arrangements a necessity for passengers. Airlines & Connectivity - Only Air Peace and United Nigeria Airlines operate from the airport. - These carriers offer flights to most major cities in Nigeria, making it a practical choice for domestic travel. - Despite limited airline options, the airport provides reliable connectivity to key destinations. Ticket Pricing - Economy class fares average around N250,000, which is notably high for domestic travel. - Savvy travelers can reduce costs to N150,000 by booking at least three days in advance. - The pricing structure reflects both limited competition and growing demand. Accessibility - The airport's distance from major urban centers in Anambra poses a challenge. - With no commercial taxi services, passengers must pre-arrange pickups or drop-offs, which can be inconvenient for spontaneous travel. Strategic Importance - For business travelers, tourists, and residents, Chinua Achebe Airport is the most efficient entry point into Anambra. - Its presence is a game-changer for regional commerce, reducing travel time and boosting connectivity. --- Verdict While Chinua Achebe Airport is still evolving, it offers a clean, functional, and strategic travel option for anyone heading to Anambra. With improvements in ground transport and expanded airline options, it has the potential to become a top-tier regional airport in Nigeria.
Anambra International Cargo Airport Umueri is one of the well-managed and decent airport with less crowd I have visited in a long time. The environment is serene, and the facilities are well functioning (at least all that I happened to use). It's pretty far from the city, so you'll have close to an hour's drive in or out of the Airport (this will cost you about 10,000 Naira with a taxi). The road and views are beautiful too. Overall it was a unique and refreshing experience. Kudos to the Anambra State government and all the staff of the place. I hope they keep up and continue to manage the place efficiently and well.
Cool. The airport is still good and in order but only two flights, Air Peace and United Nigeria Air are accessible here. The staff are trying but the security especially, need improvement. Again, it is not fair that transporters and food sellers are not using this great opportunity. There are no airport taxi or should I say they are too difficult to find. Also, inside, no corporate food and drinks sellers but petty ones within the vicinity. I don't think is proper. Generally, the place is secured and accessible by even motorcyclists and tricyclists and so on. You can enjoy your trip effortlessly
Small, new airport for Anambra state. Secure and ample parking. The glass building looks really elegant and feels spacious, cool and modern inside. It could use a few more renovations on the roof and an expanded flight selection. Bathroom was disappointing and not well kept.
Chinua Achebe International Cargo & Passenger Airport, located in Umuleri, Anambra State, is a modern gateway to southeastern Nigeria. Named after the renowned author of Things Fall Apart, the airport serves both commercial passengers and cargo operations. It was developed to boost regional connectivity, support trade, and ease travel for the growing population of Anambra and neighbouring states. The airport handles domestic flights primarily, with plans for expanded regional routes. Its dual-purpose cargo facility facilitates the export of local goods such as agricultural produce and manufactured items, linking the area to larger markets.
The airport is situated near the town of Umuleri, approximately 15 kilometres east of Onitsha and 25 kilometres south of Awka, the capital of Anambra State. It lies in the heart of the Igbo cultural region, close to the Niger River. Access is by road via the Enugu–Onitsha expressway, with local taxis and private cars being the primary transport options. There is no direct public bus service to the terminal, but shared minibuses from Onitsha and Awka drop passengers at nearby junctions. For those driving, the airport is well-signposted from major highways. The journey from Onitsha takes about 30 minutes, depending on traffic. Travelers from Enugu or Asaba should allow at least an hour. Parking is available on-site, including a wheelchair-accessible car park.
Chinua Achebe International Airport offers essential amenities focused on accessibility and comfort. The terminal features a wheelchair-accessible car park, entrance, and toilets, ensuring ease for passengers with reduced mobility. There is a dedicated changing table in the accessible toilet, convenient for families with infants. General toilets are clean and well-maintained. However, the airport does not yet have extensive retail or dining options; passengers should plan to bring snacks or eat before arriving. The check-in area is compact but efficient, and a small waiting lounge provides seating. The cargo section operates separately, handling shipments of perishables and goods. The airport's design emphasizes functionality, with clear signage and helpful staff available to assist.
Anambra State is a vibrant economic and cultural hub in southeastern Nigeria. The area is famous for its bustling markets, particularly the Onitsha Main Market, one of the largest in West Africa. The region's economy relies on trade, manufacturing, and agriculture – especially yam, cassava, and palm oil production. The Niger River, which flows nearby, supports fishing and transport. Culturally, the Igbo people have a rich heritage celebrated through festivals, art, and music. Onitsha is a major commercial centre, while Awka is the state capital known for its craftsmanship. Travelers to Chinua Achebe International Airport may be visiting for business in the industrial zones, attending cultural events, or exploring historical sites like the Ogbunike Caves and the Igbo–Ukwu bronze works. The airport's cargo operations are key for exporting fresh produce and manufactured goods to Lagos and beyond.
The airport operates on specific days and hours; currently it is not open every day. Peak passenger traffic occurs around 1 pm and 2 pm, so expect busier conditions during that window. To confirm exact opening days and flight schedules, passengers should contact their airline or check local travel agents, as no official website or phone number is publicly listed. The terminal is wheelchair-accessible, and airport staff can assist with luggage. Parking is free for short stays. For international connections, travellers will typically transit through Lagos or Abuja. Given the limited facilities, it is advisable to arrive with essentials and allow extra time for check-in. The airport represents a growing infrastructure project that continues to evolve, promising improved service as demand increases.
