Bhairahawa Airport, officially Gautam Buddha Airport, sits on the southern edge of Siddharthanagar in Nepal's Rupandehi District, roughly 20 kilometres from the Indian border and 22 kilometres from Lumbini, the birthplace of Gautama Buddha. The airport functions as the primary air gateway for pilgrims and tourists heading to Lumbini — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — and for residents of the western Terai region. It handles both domestic flights from Kathmandu and limited international services from cities including Colombo and Kuala Lumpur. The single runway, 3,000 metres long, can accommodate narrow-body aircraft such as the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737. Despite its growing importance, the airport retains a regional character: passenger numbers remain modest, and the terminal facilities are basic. Understanding what this airport offers — and what it does not — helps travellers plan accordingly.

Getting There

Siddharthanagar, formerly called Bhairahawa, is the nearest city to the airport, located about 3 kilometres to the north. From Siddharthanagar's central bus park or main market area, taxis and auto-rickshaws (tuk-tuks) are the most common transport options. A taxi ride costs around NPR 300–500 ($2–4) and takes 10–15 minutes depending on traffic. Auto-rickshaws are cheaper, NPR 100–200, but slower and less comfortable with luggage. For those arriving from outside the region, the airport is accessible via the Mahendra Highway (part of Nepal's east-west highway network). Public buses from major cities such as Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Chitwan drop passengers at Siddharthanagar's bus park, from which a short ride completes the journey. Driving from Kathmandu takes about 8–10 hours; from Pokhara about 5–6 hours. Pre-arranged hotel transfers are available from many properties in Lumbini and Siddharthanagar. International travellers arriving by air often clear immigration quickly — the airport has a dedicated international terminal building, though it is small and can become congested during peak flight times.

Inside the Terminal

The terminal at Bhairahawa Airport is divided into domestic and international sections, both housed in a single compact building. On arrival, passengers walk from the aircraft across the tarmac to the terminal — there are no jet bridges. The domestic arrivals area consists of a small hall with a single baggage carousel. Baggage handling is efficient, though delays can occur when multiple flights arrive simultaneously. Departures are straightforward: check-in counters are located immediately inside the main entrance, with a security checkpoint just beyond. Security screening is thorough but quick when queues are short. Lumbini — the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha — draws hundreds of thousands of pilgrims and tourists each year. The sacred garden, with its Maya Devi Temple, Ashoka Pillar, and monastic zones built by Buddhist communities from around the world, is the primary reason most visitors fly into Bhairahawa. The airport's expansion to handle international traffic in recent years has made it the most convenient entry point for Lumbini, bypassing the long overland journey from Kathmandu. Beyond Lumbini, the region offers other attractions. Tilaurakot, about 40 kilometres west, is the site of ancient Kapilavastu, the childhood home of the Buddha before his renunciation. Archaeological excavations there have uncovered palace structures and artefacts dating to the 6th century BCE. For nature enthusiasts, the nearby Banke National Park — a buffer zone to Bardia National Park — offers jeep safaris and bird-watching in a less crowded setting than Chitwan. Siddharthanagar itself has a lively market area along the Mahendra Highway, where shops sell everything from electronics to traditional Tharu textiles. The town's proximity to the border at Belahiya (India) means a cross-border trip to Uttar Pradesh is straightforward; many travellers combine a visit to Lumbini with a trip to Kushinagar (where Buddha died) or Sarnath (where he first taught). The food scene leans towards Indian and Nepali staples: dal bhat, momos, and chaat are widely available. Accommodation options range from basic guesthouses in Siddharthanagar to mid-range hotels in Lumbini, with the Buddha Maya Garden Hotel and the Lumbini Hokke Hotel being popular choices. One practical note: Siddharthanagar is less tourist-oriented than Kathmandu or Pokhara, so English signage is limited. Having a map app on your phone or carrying a simple phrasebook helps.

Bhairahawa Airport is open daily from approximately 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM, though hours adjust based on flight schedules. The airport does not operate 24 hours; passengers cannot stay overnight inside the terminal. The busiest days are Monday (around 4 PM), Tuesday (5 PM), Wednesday (11 AM), and Thursday (11 PM) — these times see the highest concentration of flights, leading to longer queues at check-in and security.
