Inside the Terminal

Bhamo Airport’s terminal is a single-story building with separate zones for arrivals and departures. On the arrival side, passengers exit onto a small concourse where luggage appears quickly on a single belt. The departure area houses a check-in counter, security screening, and a waiting room. The facility is wheelchair-accessible, with ramps, accessible parking, and an accessible toilet. The main toilet is clean and functional. What stands out is the overall cleanliness of the arrival and departure areas—surfaces are well-maintained and floors are mopped regularly. However, the waiting area itself is the weak point. A short boat trip downstream reaches the confluence of the Ayeyarwady and Malikha rivers, a dramatic meeting of waters flanked by forested hills. Bhamo’s population is a mix of Bamar, Kachin, Shan, and Chinese, reflected in the architecture and cuisine—a morning spent at a teahouse sampling dumplings and pickled tea leaf salad is highly recommended. The airport also serves as an entry point for travellers heading north to Myitkyina or east to the border town of Lweje.
