My flight from Morelia to San Jose Ca went pretty smooth my flight was going to depart at 9:13am I arrived there at 6:00am they scanned my boarding pass then I had to get in line for immigration to stamp my passport from there I went to revision so those 3 steps were done in 30 minutes then I went to the waiting floor...I entered the plane at 8:37...Nice small airport better than Guadalajara...
Nice and small airport. It is really comfortable and also it has a coffee shop and a souvenir shop. You can get flights from here to Mexico City, Cancun and many parts of the US with cheap airlines or not so cheap. You will need to ride a taxi to get here and you will also need to get a taxi (from the ones in the same airport) to go to Morelia (which is a 20 minute ride). Ubers are not allowed to either enter the airport, take this into account.
(Departing from) I've heard horror stories of passengers being heckled over what they bring by the agents, so coming in I was on high alert. But I was pleasantly surprised to not experience any of the things I was on guard about. The airport itself is very small (only 4 gates, or "doors" as they call them). Parking is easy to navigate. Before entering the terminal, in the lobby of the airport, you'll have access to ATMs, small cafes, and restrooms. My particular flight was with Viva to Chicago, and I didn't like that they had 4 service counters operating as the line was VERY long for this particular flight. Luckily I arrived pretty early, and made it thru with a lot of time to spare. Going thru immigration was smooth (for me I had to present my US Passport, Boarding Ticket, and the immigration receipt you get if you're not a Mexican citizen). Going thru TSA was also straightforward. Overall a smooth experience, airport is clean, and there are many services available. I will add that my flight was in the middle of the night, and I can see how if traveling during the day, the wait between service counter to immigration to TSA can be very long (very few counters open, as it is a small airport). I would exercise being earlier than usual to avoid, as best as possible, a long delay getting into the terminal. If I had to choose between the Guadalajara airport or Morelia airport, I would go with Morelia again.
Streamlined check in with only a handful of gates to navigate. There's coffee outside the gates, but not near the gates. Food and AeroMarket on both sides. For souvenirs, go to the Morelia shop first, then AeroMarket.
General Francisco Mujica International Airport (IATA: MLM) serves the city of Morelia and the broader state of Michoacán in western Mexico. Named after a former Mexican president, the airport handles both domestic and limited international flights, connecting the region to major hubs such as Mexico City, Dallas/Fort Worth, and Los Angeles. It is a key gateway for travellers visiting Morelia’s colonial centre, a UNESCO World Heritage site, as well as the famous Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve. The airport also sees significant traffic from Mexican diaspora travellers, especially during holidays, and from tourists exploring the historic and natural treasures of Michoacán.
The airport is located in the municipality of Álvaro Obregón, about 27 kilometres (17 miles) northwest of Morelia’s city centre. It sits at an elevation of 1,839 metres (6,033 feet) above sea level, which gives the area a mild, temperate climate. The terminal is accessible via Federal Highway 15D (the Morelia–Guadalajara toll road). For those driving, the airport offers a wheelchair-accessible car park near the terminal.
Travellers without their own transport have several options. Taxis and ride-shares are available outside the arrivals area; a set fare system operates for trips into Morelia. Local buses also connect the airport to the city, with routes running roughly from dawn until evening. Many hotels in Morelia offer airport shuttles – it's worth checking with your accommodation beforehand. The drive to central Morelia typically takes 30 to 40 minutes, depending on traffic.
The airport provides a range of amenities to ensure a comfortable journey for all passengers. The terminal is equipped with wheelchair-accessible car parks, entrances, and toilets, making it navigable for travellers with mobility needs. There are baby changing tables in the restrooms, a helpful feature for families. Baggage storage is available on-site, allowing travellers to explore the area without their luggage. Toilets are well-maintained and located throughout the terminal. While the airport is not exceptionally large, it offers basic services such as a small food court, duty-free shopping, and car rental desks. Free Wi-Fi is usually available in the public areas.
Note that the airport is not open 24 hours a day; operating hours are aligned with flight schedules. Peak periods occur around 9 am and 3 pm, so expect queues at check-in and security during those times.
Michoacán is a state of rich cultural and natural diversity. Morelia, its capital, is renowned for its well-preserved colonial architecture, including the magnificent Morelia Cathedral and the numerous baroque and neoclassical buildings that earned the city its UNESCO listing. The region is also famous for its cuisine: carnitas (slow-cooked pork) originated in Michoacán, and the state produces excellent avocados and other fruits.
One of Mexico’s most spectacular natural phenomena occurs here in winter: the arrival of millions of Monarch butterflies, which migrate from Canada and the United States to roost in the oyamel fir forests of the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve, a world heritage site north of Morelia. The airport serves as the most convenient entry point for visitors heading to the butterfly sanctuaries at El Rosario or Sierra Chincua.
Other attractions include the Janitzio Island on Lake Pátzcuaro, the traditional crafts towns of Pátzcuaro and Santa Clara del Cobre, and the archaeological site of Tzintzuntzan, former capital of the Purépecha empire. The region’s climate is mild year-round, though the rainy season runs from June to October.
