Busiest on Mondays around 6 pm — usually as busy as it gets.
Simplistic place with relatively strait forward process , immigration is small alike the bank teller desks, passing which you have access to the luggage belt, then straight forward to arrival hall. Arrival is on the left hand side and departure is on the right hand side opposite each other. From the top deck you can view the tarmac and the lounge for departure through a transparent window "cool for saying a last bye bye to your family/friend/colleagues" they can see you but they may not hear you. Plaine corail airport has free wifi access. All around the place
What a lovely and warm welcome we received at the airport of Plaine Corail. Amazing
Small but neat and clean airport. Staff are efficient and going through immigration and waiting for the luggages took 15 to 20 mins.
The one and only airport in Rodrigues island which welcomes national and international visitors on different flights on a daily basis.
Plaine Corail Airport is the primary air gateway to Rodrigues, a semi-autonomous outer island of the Republic of Mauritius. Located on the island's southern coast, this modest facility handles regularly scheduled flights from Mauritius’ main island, connecting Rodrigues with the capital Port Louis and international hubs via Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport. The airport also accommodates occasional charter flights from Réunion and other Indian Ocean destinations, though its core role remains domestic. Serving both residents and the growing number of tourists drawn to Rodrigues’ unspoiled landscapes, Plaine Corail is a compact but vital transport link. Despite its size, the airport offers essential services and accessibility features that make travel straightforward for all passengers.
The airport sits in the Plaine Corail area, a flat coastal plain bordered by the Indian Ocean to the south and rolling hills to the north. It is approximately 15–20 kilometres south-west of Port Mathurin, Rodrigues’ main town and administrative centre. Access is via a single sealed road (Plaine Corail Road) that connects to the island’s north-south spine. Most travellers reach the airport by pre-arranged hotel transfers, taxis, or rental cars. Public transport is limited; minibus services occasionally pass the main junction, but they run infrequently and not directly to the terminal. Taxis are readily available at the airport arrival area, and fares to Port Mathurin are fixed (around 600–800 Mauritian rupees, subject to change). For those driving, the airport provides a wheelchair-accessible car park with designated spaces close to the terminal entrance. The short distance from the main tourist areas means journey times rarely exceed 30 minutes.
Plaine Corail Airport is a small facility, but it covers the basics comfortably. Confirmed amenities include:
The terminal is single-storey and easy to navigate. While there are no restaurants or full-service cafes, vending machines and a small kiosk offer refreshments. Passengers needing more substantial meals should eat before arriving or carry snacks.
Rodrigues, the easternmost island of the Mascarene archipelago, lies 560 kilometres east of Mauritius. It is a volcanic island with a rugged topography: a central ridge of hills (rising to 398 metres at Mont Limon) surrounded by steep cliffs and narrow coastal plains. The island is renowned for its biodiversity—endemic species such as the Rodrigues fruit bat and Rodrigues warbler thrive in protected reserves like François Leguat Giant Tortoise and Cave Reserve. The surrounding lagoon, one of the largest in the Indian Ocean, is fringed by coral reefs and supports a vibrant marine ecosystem.
The economy relies on fishing (especially octopus), small-scale agriculture (onions, chillies, and livestock), and a growing eco-tourism sector. Visitors come for hiking, diving, kite-surfing, and the slower pace of life. The island maintains a distinct Creole culture with its own patois, music (séga), and cuisine (such as rougaille and poulpe à la rodriguaise). Plaine Corail Airport is the only point of entry for air travellers; the journey from Mauritius takes about 1 hour 30 minutes. The airport’s role is thus critical for medical evacuations, freight, and passenger travel.
Operating hours: The airport is not open every day. It operates on a schedule aligned with flight arrivals and departures, which are primarily concentrated in the late afternoon. The confirmed peak hours are 6 pm and 7 pm, suggesting most flights arrive or depart around that window. Passengers should check their airline for exact timing; the terminal opens approximately two hours before scheduled flights and closes shortly after departure. On days with no scheduled services (usually certain weekdays or holidays), the building is locked.
Contact: Phone +230 832 7888. There is no official website listed, but flight information and general updates are available via Air Mauritius (the primary carrier) or the Rodrigues regional tourism office.
Accessibility: The airport is fully step-free from car park to gate. Wheelchair users can enter without assistance. The accessible toilet is well maintained. Baggage storage operates during open hours; fees are nominal and payable in cash (Mauritian rupees).
Tips: Arrive at least 90 minutes before your flight, as check-in and security can be busy due to limited staff. If you have a late evening departure, consider booking a hotel day room or spending time in Port Mathurin before heading to the airport, as the terminal has no extended lounges. For passengers connecting to Mauritius, ensure your booking includes sufficient layover time for baggage re-check.
Plaine Corail Airport may be small, but it efficiently serves as Rodrigues’ lifeline. With its accessible design, baggage storage, and friendly staff, it provides a stress-free start or end to your island experience.
