Tioman Airport occupies a narrow strip of land on the western coast of Tioman Island, about two kilometres north of the main village of Tekek. The runway runs parallel to the beach, and the terminal building is a single-storey structure painted in white and blue. The airport handles a modest number of flights each day, mostly turboprops from Kuala Lumpur Subang and seasonal charters from Singapore. For many visitors, this flight is the quickest way to reach an island that otherwise requires a two-hour ferry crossing from the mainland.

Getting There

Tioman Airport is located on Tioman Island, which lies roughly 40 kilometres off the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia. The nearest major mainland town is Mersing in Johor, approximately 2.5 hours by road from Kuantan. To reach the airport, most travellers first arrive in Kuantan (the capital of Pahang state) and then make their way to the jetty at Mersing or Tanjung Gemok. From Kuantan, a taxi or bus to Mersing costs around MYR 80–100 and takes about 2 hours 30 minutes. Ferries from Mersing to Tekek run two to four times daily depending on the season; the crossing lasts 1.5 to 2 hours. Once on Tioman Island, taxis from Tekek jetty to the airport cost MYR 10–15 and take 5 minutes. Alternatively, direct flights from Kuala Lumpur Subang Airport (SZB) to Tioman (TOD) operate several times a week, cutting the total travel time from Kuantan to less than two hours including the flight. Note that road access to the airport is limited to a single sealed road that passes through Tekek village, so allow extra time during peak holiday periods when traffic can be heavy.

Inside the Terminal

The terminal at Tioman Airport is compact and functional. Arrivals and departures share a single waiting area with plastic seating for about 40 people. Check-in counters open one hour before each scheduled departure. Security screening is present but minimal — bags are x-rayed and passengers walk through a metal detector. The confirmed facilities include a wheelchair-accessible entrance, a wheelchair-accessible car park, standard toilets, and a wheelchair-accessible toilet. There is no airside restaurant; a small kiosk before security sells drinks, snacks, and basic toiletries. Although Tioman Airport sits on an island, its connection to Kuantan is significant. Kuantan, the state capital of Pahang, is the nearest major city on the mainland and serves as the primary transit point for travellers heading to Tioman. The drive from Kuantan to the ferry points at Mersing or Tanjung Gemok passes through oil palm plantations and fishing villages, offering a glimpse of rural life on the east coast. Kuantan itself has its own attractions that make a stop worthwhile. Teluk Chempedak, a popular beach with golden sand and clear water, is only 15 minutes from Kuantan's city centre. The nearby Sungai Lembing — a former tin-mining town turned eco-tourism destination — features a hanging bridge, underground tunnels, and a panoramic view from Bukit Panorama. For wildlife enthusiasts, Taman Negara National Park is a three-hour drive from Kuantan, offering jungle trekking, river cruises, and canopy walks. The city's culinary scene is strong, with night markets (pasar malam) serving local specialities such as nasi dagang, keropok lekor, and satay. Kuantan's relative lack of international tourism compared to Penang or Kuala Lumpur means prices are lower and crowds are smaller. Many visitors to Tioman choose to spend a night or two in Kuantan before or after their island stay, making the airport part of a broader travel itinerary that combines mainland culture and natural attractions with island diving and relaxation. Tioman Island itself is renowned for its coral reefs, marine life, and jungle-covered hills. The airport's role as a quick connection to this natural paradise is vital for travellers who want to maximise their time on the island rather than spend hours on a ferry.

Tioman Airport is not open every day — flights are scheduled only on certain days of the week, and the terminal itself closes when no flights are due. Check the flight schedule with the airline (usually Berjaya Air or seasonal charters) before planning your trip. One concrete piece of advice: if you are flying out on a day with multiple departures, check whether your flight is the first or second of the day, as the terminal may open only 30 minutes before the first flight and close again between departures.
