Our group of 17 took an early morning flight from Roberts International Airport on Asky Airlines. Entry to the airport was easy with several security checks. We checked in, checked our bags and then took shuttle back to our hotel for breakfast before our flight. The airport is small with a similar size duty free shop with basics. Immigration is fairly quick and very thorough.
They have time to open the waiting hall. They normally open it 5 in the morning. When l arrived, some of our boxes didn't arrive Monrovia. It is 2 hrs plus distance to the town.
The workers are taking monies from passengers.they said I was carrying dry fish so I should step aside I did. This tall black man asking me for money or else he will put away my suitcase and I will be left behind. I handed him the money and he said just put it on the ground I asked why don't you take it from me? He said camara all around. I said so it's not legal and you doing it? He got mad and said I should go get fish documents and he should me where to go. I asked so why the market women didn't give me fish documents when I brought them but you asking me to go get it at the airport? All the workers were yelling to shut up and just give them monies. From outside all the way upstairs they asking for money in a aggressive ways. Liberia is very corrupt!!! They can stress you out from arrival to departure. An't your getting pay? Even the traffic policemen are taking monies from drivers without doing anything wrong. Before you even enter in the fence at the airport they will make you pay extra money even though you pay for your parking ticket. 6/01/25 we arrived,6/20/25 my son left and 7/04/25 I leaving... same forcing people to give them monies or you will be delayed. This is bad. Ghanaians and ivory coast are not like this but Liberians. Very rude and not professional. I'm speechless what I saw.why Immigration are asking for money my documents are all good!why im I giving you monies for? Ghanaian and ivorian are the best
One of the best places I've been. This place is kind of isolated for just the right people. It has the Farmington Hotel and some nice restaurants around that serve great dish!
Roberts International Airport (IATA: ROB) is the primary international gateway to Liberia, West Africa. Located in the town of Harbel, approximately 50 kilometres southeast of the capital Monrovia, the airport handles the bulk of the country’s scheduled passenger flights, connecting Liberia with destinations in Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. It is operated by the Liberia Airport Authority and serves as a base for regional carriers and charter operations. The airport is named after Joseph James Cheeseman Roberts, the first president of Liberia. Despite its modest size compared to major international hubs, Roberts International is the key entry point for business travellers, expatriates, humanitarian workers, and tourists visiting Liberia’s coastal attractions and natural reserves.
Roberts International Airport is situated in Harbel, Margibi County, about an hour’s drive from Monrovia’s city centre under normal traffic conditions. The airport lies near the Du River and is surrounded by rubber plantations and rural settlements. Access is primarily by road via the Robertsfield Highway (also known as the Monrovia–Buchanan Highway), a two-lane paved road that can be congested during peak hours. Taxis and private cars are the most common means of transport; there is no direct public bus service to the airport. Many hotels in Monrovia offer shuttle services for guests. Rental car desks are available at the terminal, though advance booking is recommended. For those travelling to or from other parts of Liberia, domestic flights are limited; most journeys are made by road or boat. The airport’s proximity to the coast means the climate is tropical, with heavy rainfall from May to October affecting road conditions.
The terminal at Roberts International is functional but basic. The following confirmed amenities are available to passengers:
Passengers should note that the terminal can become busy during peak hours (approximately 5 pm and 6 pm), when several international flights depart. It is advisable to arrive at least three hours before departure.
Roberts International Airport serves as the main air link to Liberia, a country on the Atlantic coast of West Africa. The airport’s location in Harbel places it near the historic Firestone rubber plantation, one of the largest in the world, which has been a cornerstone of the local economy since the 1920s. The region is known for its lush tropical forests, biodiversity, and nature reserves such as Sapo National Park, which is accessible by road from nearby towns. Monrovia, the capital, is a bustling port city with a mix of modern and colonial architecture, vibrant markets, and coastal beaches. Travellers often visit for business in the mining, rubber, and shipping industries, or for humanitarian work. Tourism is growing, with interest in eco-tourism, cultural heritage, and the beaches of Robertsport (a separate town north of the airport). The region’s history includes periods of civil conflict, but recovery has been steady, and the airport has been modernised in recent years to improve security and passenger flow.
Roberts International Airport, while compact, provides essential services for travellers entering Liberia. Plan your journey with realistic expectations and allow extra time during peak periods.
