Overview

Amboseli Airstrip, also known as Ol Tukai Airstrip, is a small unpaved landing strip situated within Amboseli National Park in southern Kenya. It is primarily used by charter flights and scheduled safari operators flying tourists directly into the heart of the park. Unlike major international airports, Amboseli Airstrip is a no-frills facility designed for quick access to one of Africa's most celebrated wildlife destinations. The airstrip is busy during peak tourist seasons, especially in the early morning hours when flights arrive and depart to maximize game viewing time.

Location & Access

Amboseli Airstrip lies inside Amboseli National Park, near the park's main gate and the Ol Tukai Lodge. The airstrip is roughly 240 kilometers (150 miles) southeast of Nairobi, Kenya's capital. The nearest town with significant services is Namanga, about 70 kilometers away on the Tanzania border. Travelers can reach the airstrip by scheduled or charter flights from Nairobi's Wilson Airport, Mombasa, or other Kenyan safari hubs. Flight time from Nairobi is approximately 45 minutes to an hour. Alternatively, road access from Nairobi takes around 4 to 5 hours via the Nairobi–Namanga highway, but most visitors prefer flying to save time and enjoy aerial views of the landscape.

Given its location inside a national park, arriving by air allows visitors to avoid long drives on sometimes rough roads and provides a seamless start to their safari. Once at the airstrip, safari vehicles from lodges or camps typically meet passengers for transfer to accommodation.

Facilities

Amboseli Airstrip offers basic facilities to ensure passenger comfort and accessibility. Confirmed amenities include a wheelchair-accessible car park, a wheelchair-accessible entrance, and a wheelchair-accessible toilet, along with a standard toilet. These features make the airstrip usable for travelers with reduced mobility, though the unpaved surroundings may still pose challenges. There is no terminal building; instead, passengers wait under a small shade structure or open-sided shelter. Refreshments are not available on site, so it is advisable to bring water and snacks. The airstrip also lacks a control tower or commercial shops; operations are handled by ground handlers from the airlines.

About the Region

Amboseli National Park is famous for its large herds of elephants and stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak, which lies just across the border in Tanzania. The park covers 392 square kilometers and is part of a larger ecosystem that includes communal Maasai ranches. The region is semi-arid, with seasonal swamps fed by underground rivers from Kilimanjaro's melting snow. These swamps attract abundant wildlife, including lions, cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, and wildebeests. Birdlife is also prolific, with over 400 species recorded.

The area is culturally rich, home to the Maasai people, who maintain many of their traditional pastoralist ways. Many lodges and camps in the park offer cultural visits to Maasai villages. The best time for wildlife viewing is during the dry season from July to October and January to February, when animals concentrate around water sources.

Practical Information

Amboseli Airstrip does not have a fixed schedule; it operates on demand and is not open every day. Flights are arranged by tour operators or airlines based on booking requests. Peak activity occurs around 8:00 AM and 9:00 AM when morning arrivals and departures are common. There is no public phone number or website for the airstrip itself; all inquiries should be directed to the airline or charter company handling the flight. Because the airstrip is in a national park, park entry fees apply to all passengers – these are usually included in the tour package or paid before boarding. Travelers should confirm flight times, baggage allowances (typically soft bags only), and any weight restrictions with their operator. It is also wise to carry a light jacket as mornings can be cool, and insect repellent for evening stays.
