The airstrip is named after the nearby Kichwa Tembo Camp, whose name means "Elephant's Head" in Swahili, referencing the shape of a local hill.

Kichwa Tembo Airstrip is situated in Narok County, southwestern Kenya, approximately 45 kilometres (28 miles) southeast of the Maasai Mara's main gate, Sekenani. It lies within the Maasai Mara National Reserve, close to the Talek River and the border with the Mara Triangle. The coordinates are roughly 1°14′S 35°00′E. The airstrip is about a 45-minute drive from the town of Narok (the county capital) and about a 5-hour drive from Nairobi, though most travellers fly directly.

Access to the airstrip is primarily by air from Nairobi's Wilson Airport (about a 45-minute flight) or from other Mara airstrips like Mara Serena or Ol Kiombo. On the ground, vehicle transfers are arranged by lodges or tour operators. The nearest major city is Nairobi, approximately 250 kilometres (155 miles) to the east, but the airstrip itself is remote, surrounded by savannah grasslands and acacia woodlands. There is no public transport to the airstrip; all arrivals and departures are coordinated with safari camps. Parking is limited to a small area for transfer vehicles.

Facilities

Kichwa Tembo Airstrip is a basic facility with minimal infrastructure. The confirmed amenity is a toilet, likely a simple pit latrine or composting toilet, typical for remote airstrips. There is no terminal building, no waiting lounge, no food or drink outlets, and no shops. Passengers are advised to arrive with everything they need for the day. There are no food or beverage services, so carry water and snacks if needed. Luggage weight restrictions on small aircraft are strict, typically 15 kg per person in soft-sided bags (hard suitcases are often not allowed).

Accessibility: The airstrip is basic, with no paved walkways. Passengers with mobility issues should arrange for assistance through their tour operator in advance.
