Overview

Eldoret International Airport serves as a key aviation hub in western Kenya, linking the Rift Valley region with domestic and international destinations. Originally a domestic airstrip, it was upgraded to international status to accommodate larger aircraft and growing traffic, particularly from the surrounding agricultural and business communities. The airport primarily handles passenger flights within Kenya (notably to Nairobi, Mombasa, and Kisumu) and selected regional routes, as well as cargo operations for exports such as flowers, tea, and horticultural produce. It is operated by the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA).

Location & Access

Eldoret International Airport is situated approximately 16 kilometres (10 miles) south-west of Eldoret city centre, in Uasin Gishu County. It lies along the A104 highway, which connects the town to Nairobi (about 310 km south-east) and the Uganda border at Malaba (about 100 km west). The airport sits at an elevation of 2,130 metres (6,988 feet) above sea level, characteristic of the highland plateau.

Getting there:

• By car: The airport can be reached via a tarmac road from the A104 junction at the town of Kapseret. Ample parking is available, including a wheelchair-accessible car park.
• By taxi or ride-hailing services: Taxis are readily available from Eldoret town centre; the journey takes about 25–30 minutes depending on traffic.
• By public matatu (minibus): Matatus from the main stage in Eldoret heading towards Moiben or Kaptagat pass near the airport; a short walk from the junction is required.
• Nearby cities: The airport also serves travellers to Iten (30 km north-east, a renowned athletics training hub), Kitale (80 km north-west), and the Lake Victoria region (Kisumu about 110 km south-west).

Eldoret International Airport provides essential passenger amenities. Confirmed facilities include:

• Wheelchair-accessible facilities: The car park, entrance, and toilets are all wheelchair-accessible, ensuring mobility-impaired passengers can navigate the terminal with ease.
• Baggage storage: Luggage left-luggage services are available for passengers needing to store bags short-term.
• Toilets and baby changing: Clean toilets, including an adult changing table, are provided. A baby changing station is available in one of the accessible restrooms.

The terminal is relatively compact, with a single passenger concourse. There are a few retail kiosks selling snacks, drinks, and basic travel essentials, plus a small café near the departure lounge. Free Wi-Fi may be available (check with airport information).

Eldoret and the surrounding Rift Valley highlands are renowned for several distinct characteristics:

• Athletics capital: The area is world-famous as a training ground for elite long-distance runners. Kalenjin-speaking communities, particularly from Nandi and Uasin Gishu, have produced numerous Olympic and world champions. Many training camps are located in and around Eldoret and Iten.
• Agriculture: The fertile soils support large-scale farming of maize, wheat, tea, and dairy. The region is a key breadbasket for Kenya. Additionally, flower farms near Lake Naivasha and elsewhere export through Eldoret’s cargo facilities.
• Geographic setting: The airport sits on the Uasin Gishu Plateau, part of the greater East African Rift Valley. The landscape is characterised by rolling green hills, clear skies, and a moderate climate (average temperature 18°C/64°F).
• Tourism: Travellers use Eldoret as a base to visit attractions such as Lake Turkana (north), the Cherangani Hills, Saiwa Swamp National Park (home to the rare sitatunga antelope), and the Kakamega Forest. The airport also serves business travellers attending conferences in Eldoret or visiting nearby universities (Moi University, University of Eldoret).

• Hours of operation: The airport is open daily from early morning to late evening. Peak hours are around 12:00 PM and 1:00 PM, coinciding with scheduled flights to and from Nairobi.

• Transport from the airport: Pre-booked taxis or ride-hailing apps (Uber, Bolt) are the most convenient. Matatus operate until about 7 PM but are less reliable for late arrivals.

Plan to arrive at least two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international departures, especially during peak periods.
