Busiest on Mondays around 9 pm — usually busy.
It's a tiny airport. A new one is being made. Staff is helpful. Especially, the girl in charge of information solved my problem by using the translation application. Clean toilet. It has a cafe.
Very quick check in process. Small and basic Airport. The best thing is they have more than one coffeeshop available and a charging station for phones right at the waiting hall. In some major airports someone has to search for a place to plugin.
Very basic. Girls who wanted to weigh my hand luggage even though I had paid for 10kg. It was 9.2kg. I saw lots of people who had multiple bags and this was unchallenged. The flight departures were not displayed in the waiting areas. No announcements in English. EVERYTHING ELSE about Oskemen was fantastic but not the airport.
Small airport, mainly serving with Air Astana. Arrival is super efficient. We had our checked luggage without any waiting. Departure efficient. Check in opens 90 minutes before the flight. One restaurant and an ATM before security. Only vending machines behind security.
Oskemen International Airport (IATA: UKK, ICAO: UASK) serves as the primary aviation gateway for eastern Kazakhstan and the city of Oskemen (formerly known as Ust-Kamenogorsk). The airport handles a mix of domestic flights connecting to major Kazakh cities such as Almaty, Nur-Sultan (Astana), and Shymkent, as well as seasonal and regular international services, primarily to Russian destinations like Novosibirsk and Moscow. It also accommodates charter flights for mining and industrial operations, reflecting the region’s economic backbone. While not a massive hub, the airport is well maintained and essential for both business travellers heading to the local metallurgical plants and tourists exploring the Altai Mountains.
Oskemen International Airport is situated approximately 11 kilometres northwest of the city centre, off the A3 highway leading toward Shemonaikha and the Russian border. The ride into town usually takes around 20 minutes by car, though traffic can slow things down during peak hours (which the airport reports as 8 pm and 9 pm – likely when flights arrive or depart).
By Taxi – Taxis are the most reliable way to reach the city. Official airport taxis can be hailed outside the terminal, or you can use local ride-hailing apps such as Yandex Taxi. Fares are reasonable, but always agree on the price before departing if not using a metered service.
By Public Transport – Buses and minibuses (marshrutkas) connect the airport with the city. Routes and schedules are infrequent and often not posted in English, so check with the information desk or ask at the terminal for the current option. The nearest bus stop is a short walk from the terminal.
By Car – If driving, the airport has a parking lot adjacent to the terminal. Rates are modest, and the lot is monitored. The approach road is well signposted from the city.
No train service connects directly to the airport; the nearest railway station is Oskemen-1 in the city centre.
The terminal at Oskemen International is compact but provides the essential amenities passengers need for a comfortable journey. Based on confirmed facilities:
Note that the airport is not open all days (likely closed during certain holidays or maintenance periods), so confirm your flight schedule in advance.
Oskemen (Ust-Kamenogorsk) lies at the confluence of the Irtysh and Ulba rivers, in the foothills of the Altai Mountains. This region of Kazakhstan is famed for its mineral wealth and heavy industry, particularly the processing of non-ferrous metals such as lead, zinc, titanium, and magnesium. The city has a distinctly Soviet-era industrial character, but the surrounding landscape offers dramatic natural beauty.
Travellers fly into Oskemen for several reasons:
The climate is continental, with hot summers (up to 35 °C) and very cold winters (down to –40 °C). Best visiting months are May to September for outdoor activities.
Airport Website: https://airport-uk.kz/ (available in Russian and Kazakh; limited English).
Phone: +7 7232 77 84 84 – this number connects to the airport administration. For flight inquiries, it is best to contact your airline.
Opening Hours: The terminal is not open 24 hours a day. It operates in line with scheduled flights. If you have an early morning departure, arrive well after the terminal opens; otherwise, you may find the building closed. Most flights seem to cluster around late afternoon and evening (peak hours noted as 8 pm and 9 pm).
Check-in: It is recommended to arrive at least two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international departures. Security is thorough but efficient.
Currency: The Kazakh tenge (KZT) is the local currency. Credit cards may be accepted at larger shops, but cash is king at the airport and in town. ATMs are available inside the terminal, but their reliability can be spotty.
Language: Kazakh and Russian are the main languages. English is rarely spoken by airport staff, so having a translation app or a phrasebook is helpful.
For the most current information on flight status, parking, and terminal services, check the airport’s website in advance or call the phone number provided.
