Nice airport. The staff are nice and helpful. The airport is an older, school lookalike structure. feels like walking into an office building rather to an airport. The luggage comes on a trailer into a room and everyone just take their's (no carousals). in the check-in they have old style scale. Lots of parking but no Wifi.
Small airport little far from town
Semey Airport (PLX) serves the city of Semey (formerly Semipalatinsk) in eastern Kazakhstan. It is a modest regional airport handling domestic flights, primarily connecting to Almaty, Nur-Sultan, and other Kazakh cities. The airport also accommodates occasional charter flights, mainly for passengers travelling to or from the surrounding East Kazakhstan Region. While it is not a major international gateway, it plays a vital role for residents and visitors alike, offering a convenient alternative to longer road or rail journeys. The terminal is compact and straightforward, designed to process a manageable flow of travellers efficiently. The airport's peak hours fall around midday (12 pm and 1 pm), when multiple flights are scheduled. Outside these times, the airport is relatively quiet.
Semey Airport is situated about 13 kilometres southeast of Semey city centre, just off the A-1 highway. The journey by car typically takes 15–20 minutes, depending on traffic. Taxis are the most common way to reach the airport; they can be found at the taxi ranks in the city or arranged by phone. There is no direct public bus service to the terminal, though some local minibuses (marshrutkas) pass along the main road within walking distance – but this is not a reliable option with luggage. Most passengers arrange private transfers or rely on taxis. The airport also serves the wider region, including towns such as Ust-Kamenogorsk (Oskemen) about 200 kilometres to the east, though that city has its own airport. For those driving, parking is available just outside the terminal, and the lot is small but usually sufficient.
Semey Airport provides a range of basic amenities to ensure passenger comfort. The terminal is wheelchair-accessible, with designated parking spaces close to the entrance, an accessible entrance, and accessible toilets. For families, there is a changing table in the restroom. Baggage storage is available, useful for travellers who wish to explore the city without their luggage. Standard toilets are also present. The airport does not have extensive retail or dining options; a small café or snack bar may operate during flight times, but offerings are limited. Travellers are advised to bring their own food and drinks if they have specific needs. There is no duty-free shop, as the airport handles mostly domestic traffic. However, the check-in and boarding areas are clean and functional, with seating and basic information displays.
Semey is located on the banks of the Irtysh River, one of the longest rivers in Asia. The city has a rich history as a cultural and scientific centre, most notably associated with the poet and philosopher Abai Qunanbaiuly, who lived in the region. Semey was also a key location during the Soviet era as the gateway to the Semipalatinsk Test Site, where nuclear testing occurred. Today, the area is known for its educational institutions, such as the Abai University, and its role in Kazakh intellectual life. The surrounding East Kazakhstan Region offers diverse landscapes, from the steppes to the Altai Mountains in the east. Travellers often visit Semey to learn about its history, explore the Irtysh River embankment, or use it as a starting point for journeys into the Kazakh countryside. The airport serves both leisure and business travellers, including those connected to local industries such as mechanical engineering and agriculture.
Semey Airport is not open daily in the traditional sense; it operates only when flights are scheduled. Passengers should confirm their flight times and arrive at least two hours before departure for domestic flights. The airport's official website is https://aeroport.kz/city.php?code=plx, where you can find flight schedules and contact details. The phone number for enquiries is +7 7222 36 02 22. Note that the airport may be closed on days with no flights, so checking in advance is essential. The terminal has no 24-hour services, and access may be restricted outside operating hours. For any assistance, including wheelchair access or baggage storage, contact the airport directly. Given its size, services are straightforward, and staff are typically available during peak periods.
In summary, Semey Airport is a functional regional hub with essential amenities. While it lacks the frills of larger airports, it covers the needs of passengers travelling to and from this part of Kazakhstan. With its convenient location and accessibility features, it provides a solid entry point to the region.
