Chubu Centrair International Airport (NGO) is the primary international gateway to central Japan, serving the Chubu region which includes the major city of Nagoya. Built on an artificial island in Ise Bay off the coast of Tokoname, the airport opened in 2005 and quickly became a key hub for both domestic and international travel. It handles flights to numerous Asian destinations as well as long-haul routes to North America and Europe. The airport's modern design and efficient layout make it a convenient transit point for business and leisure travelers alike. Its check-in counters for international flights are located on the third floor of the terminal, offering direct access to departure gates.
Centrair is situated on an artificial island in Ise Bay, approximately 35 kilometers south of Nagoya city center. The airport is well connected to the mainland via the Meiko-Chuo Expressway and the Meitetsu Airport Line railway. The Meitetsu limited express train from Nagoya Station reaches Centrair in about 28 minutes, making it a quick and reliable option. Buses also operate between the airport and various cities in the region, including Nagoya, Gifu, and Kyoto. For those driving, there is a large parking garage attached to the terminal. Taxis and ride-sharing services are readily available at the arrivals level. The airport's unique location provides panoramic views of Ise Bay and the surrounding coastline, especially from the observation deck.
The international check-in counters area is equipped with a range of accessibility features, including a wheelchair-accessible car park, wheelchair-accessible entrance, wheelchair-accessible toilet, and a changing table. These amenities ensure that passengers with disabilities or families with young children can navigate the check-in process comfortably. Beyond the check-in area, the airport offers a variety of services: multiple restaurants and cafes serving Japanese and international cuisine, duty-free shops, a convenience store, and a business lounge. The observation deck, located on the fourth floor, is a popular spot for plane spotting and enjoying sea breezes. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the terminal, and there are charging stations for electronic devices. For overnight travelers, a capsule hotel is available near the departure gates.
The Chubu region is a dynamic area of Japan, known for its industrial strength—particularly the automotive industry with Toyota headquartered in Toyota City—as well as its rich cultural heritage and natural beauty. Nagoya, the region's largest city, offers attractions such as Nagoya Castle, the Atsuta Shrine, and the Nagoya City Science Museum. Beyond the city, travelers can explore the historic town of Kyoto, accessible via a short train ride, or venture into the Japanese Alps for hiking and skiing. The Ise Grand Shrine, one of Japan's most sacred Shinto sites, is located in nearby Mie Prefecture. The region is also famous for its culinary specialties, including hitsumabushi (grilled eel over rice), miso katsu (pork cutlet with miso sauce), and tebasaki (chicken wings). Whether visiting for business or pleasure, Centrair serves as an excellent starting point for discovering central Japan.
The check-in counters for international flights at Centrair are open during flight operation times. The airport itself is open 24 hours, but individual shops and services may have limited hours. Peak hours at the check-in counters are typically around 8 am and 9 am, corresponding to morning departure waves. Travelers should plan to arrive at least two to three hours before their international flight. For inquiries, the airport's general information phone number is +81 569-38-1195. Detailed terminal maps and guidance are available on the official website: https://www.centrair.jp/map/index.html. The airport is closed on certain days? Actually, the airport operates every day, but some airline check-in counters may not be open on all days; it's best to confirm with your airline. Note that the facilities listed—wheelchair-accessible car park, entrance, toilet, and changing table—are specifically located in the international check-in area, ensuring accessibility from the moment you arrive.
