Busiest on Mondays around 11 am — usually as busy as it gets.
We arrived in Nagoya last March 15, 2023. Passing thru the immigration arrival area was really fast, especially since we already did the online process. The baggage claim area was not packed with people as compared to Kansai Airport when we were there last January 2023. Passing thru customs was very organized and fast as well. The whole airport wasn't that packed with tourists as compared to Kansai. It was very clean also.
It's not the biggest, fanciest, or popular. But it has the necessary and economic airlines are an option in this airport. It has an Starbucks and like 5 open restaurants, but some others open just in the weekends.
Cute small modern airport. Fastest entry and then exit of a country I've ever experienced. Even the check-in and bag drop barely took 5 minutes. Very efficient. I thought the ninja puppets hanging from the ceiling were a nice touch. I wish some more of the stores were open in the departure hall. And I wish I could have found one last bottle of sparkling water in any(!) of the many vending machines. But the duty free shop did allow me to taste some Japanese single malt whiskies. (Very nice, but at 14,000 Yen per above my price range.) Main disappointment: the business class lounge was really not that good & there is not a single bottle of Choya for sale anywhere. I wish I had gotten some in town; but I thought I could save the hassle of packing and just do duty free carry-on.
Nice airport and very friendly service
Nagoya Airport, also known as Komaki Airport, is a domestic airport serving the Nagoya metropolitan area in central Japan. Located in Toyoyama, a small town in Aichi Prefecture, it handles regional flights within Japan, primarily operated by Japan Airlines (JAL) and Fuji Dream Airlines (FDA). Before the opening of Chubu Centrair International Airport in 2005, Komaki was Nagoya's main international gateway. Today, it remains an important hub for domestic travel, offering flights to cities like Sapporo, Fukuoka, and Okinawa. The airport is significantly smaller and less crowded than Centrair, making it a convenient option for passengers flying to domestic destinations.
Nagoya Airport is situated about 10 kilometres north of Nagoya city centre, in the town of Toyoyama. It is well-connected by public transport and road. The most common way to reach the airport is by bus. Meitetsu Bus operates express services between Nagoya Station and the airport, taking roughly 30–40 minutes. There are also buses from major areas such as Sakae, Kanayama, and even from Chubu Centrair Airport. Airport limousine buses are available from various hotels and transport hubs.
For drivers, the airport is accessible via the Nagoya Expressway Route 7 and the Meiji Road. Parking is available in a paid multi-storey car park and a paid parking lot, both within walking distance of the terminal. The airport also has a wheelchair-accessible car park and entrance. For those arriving by taxi, the journey from Nagoya Station costs around ¥3000–4000. The nearest train stations are Komaki Station on the Meitetsu Komaki Line or Ajima Station on the Toyotetsu Line, but both require a connecting bus to reach the terminal. Overall, the bus is the most practical option for most travellers.
Nagoya Airport offers a range of facilities to ensure a comfortable travel experience, especially for passengers with reduced mobility. The terminal is wheelchair-accessible, with a wheelchair-accessible entrance, car park, and toilets. Baby changing tables are available in the restrooms. Free Wi-Fi is provided throughout the terminal, allowing passengers to stay connected. Baggage storage services are available for those who need to store luggage temporarily. The airport also has basic on-site services, though it does not have extensive shopping or dining options like larger international airports. Vending machines and a small convenience store are typically available. The terminal is compact, making navigation easy. Toilets are clean and well-maintained. For those waiting, there are seating areas. Note that the airport is not open 24 hours; it operates during scheduled flight times, so check the website for current terminal hours.
Nagoya is the heart of the Chubu region, one of Japan's most economically vital areas. The city is famous for its automotive industry, home to Toyota Motor Corporation, and a hub for ceramics, robotics, and aerospace. Culturally, Nagoya boasts landmarks such as Nagoya Castle, Atsuta Shrine (one of Japan's most important Shinto shrines), and the Nagoya City Science Museum. The region is also known for its unique cuisine, including hitsumabushi (grilled eel on rice), misokatsu (pork cutlet with miso sauce), and tebasaki (chicken wings).
Beyond Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture offers attractions like the historic town of Inuyama, with its original castle, and the Meiji Mura open-air museum. The prefecture is also a gateway to the Japan Alps and the scenic Kiso Valley. Many travellers use Nagoya Airport to access these destinations or to connect to other parts of Japan. The airport's location near Nagoya's northern suburbs makes it ideal for those staying in that area.
The airport website (https://nagoya-airport.jp/) provides up-to-date information on flight schedules, terminal hours, and services. The phone number is +81 568-28-5633. Note that the airport is not open every day; it typically has operational hours aligned with flight departures and arrivals. Peak times are around 10 am and 11 am, when most morning departures occur. It is advisable to arrive at least 60 minutes before a domestic flight. Parking fees are reasonable, and the car parks are conveniently located. For passengers with special needs, the airport offers wheelchair assistance and accessible facilities. Always confirm flight details and hours on the official website before travelling, as schedules can change.
Nagoya Airport provides a straightforward, no-fuss experience for domestic travellers. Its proximity to central Nagoya, combined with essential facilities and easy access, makes it a practical choice for flying within Japan.
